I think you're spot on. Some people have a little too much cash to throw just so they dont have to use their trolling motor a little more to stay in one spot.
Another positive is that since they are not constantly trolling, they won't scare as many fish.
Someone just needs to invent a boat that levitates. That'll put a new meaning to "Dry ride."
I think there would be some value if you were ripping fish off their beds during spawning times. Easier to concentrate on teasing the fish if you are positioned solid. I saw Alton on Bassmasters with his down in the water this week on Bassmaster's, what gives? Smoothing out the rough water?

Bed fish very spooky to any type of noise movement.
2 power poles = a 25 lb sack and a win
1st place money plus Skeeter real money...they are almost paid for already
The thing is I could sit there and just concentrate on the fish...never having to worry about anything else except catching. While prefishing I could spot a bed lower the poles and stop before the wind blew me into the area. If I was coming the other way into the wind I could not see the beds until I was on top of them. So yeah they look funny. I took a whole lot of crap from the guys I fish with/against. But in the end....I beat 129 of them and feel that the power poles helped me do it.
If you get one you will never have a boat with out one again. Bed fishing is great, no noise and stay positioned. When it is windy lets say you break off or want to retie, put the pole down and do your business, the boat did not blow way off. Windy and fishing in on a grass edge, put the pole in the grass and it will hold you there. Flipping while the wind wants to blow you down the edge too fast, just lower the pole. Most times you can fish slower and more proficent and use less trolling motor.
Like scbass said, they have a ton of uses. I thought they were a gimic unti I fished the Southern Bass Open with J Todd Tucker and he had two of them. They are good for bed fishing, but they are also good any time you need to control the back end of the boat. A few times I have wished I had them were:
This past weekend I was fishing and it was really windy. I was fishing in the wind because that seemed to be where the fish were holding best. Any time I caught a fish or needed to retie, I would get off the trolling motor and guess where the boat went. I had a partner, but it was a BFL, and they couldn't get on the trolling motor due to the rules. If I had the power poles, I could just lower them and not worry about making sure I don't blow into someones dock/boat.
A month ago I was fishing another BFL and flipping docks. The fish were positioned WAY under the docks, so I would fish a dock, and then kick my t-motor on high and cruise to the next dock. There were a few times when I tried to retie or do something else, and would come up on the dock faster than I would have liked. If I had the power poles, I could have used them to slow me down instead of blowing a bunch of wash under the dock I was about to fish
Last week I was flipping blowdowns during a big storm, and the wind kept pusing the back end of the boat pretty much into the bank. That wasn't that big of a deal, but when I went to move around the tree, I was dragging the end of my boat over the tree and possibly spooking fish. With the power pole I could hold the end without any problems.
I know when I have the cash, I plan on getting 2. I think they are a huge asset to fishing shallow waters. I know a bunch of guys on my home lake will probably snicker, but when I can fish shallow water more productivly than they can, it will be worth it. Also, look at the pro's boats. If it was a gimic, I don't think as many of them would be using one or two.
I wish I could afford one. where I fish is all shallow, and it kind of sucks being on the TM ALL DAY LONG fighting wind, and running my batteries low. trying to fight a fish, and keeping the boat out of the stumps & rocks.....I'd LOVE a power pole!! fishing is supposed to be relaxing. fighting wind with a TM pedal is not relaxing to me
I would not want them if they were FREE.They are in the way of a person fishing from the back of the boat.I do a lot of sidearm & roll casting & I'd break a lot of fishing rods.
Try fishing a hump or a ledge with 20+ mph wind in a stump field. Then you'll understand the value. They are also very convenient at the ramp. And for those that are side arm/roll casters, you can lower them about a foot to be same height as the engine cowling.
I also have a "redneck" power pole ( 3ft PVC pipe with a rope looped on one end ) that works out in deeper water if there's some to tie up to.
Some people don`t see the need for big motors, depth finders, trolling motors or fiberglass boats. I have all these things but if someone doesn`t feel they need this stuff it`s OK with me!
To each his own. I don't even use mine a ton to benefit me fishing, but has a lot of uses. I use mine a lot after I catch a fish I'll use it to hold me while I cull fish, no more tying up at the ramp. I fish a river 95% of the time, so its nice to hold me off the bank while I pack stuff up to take off or keep me from drifting into the banks. I really think on rivers where you can get into schools of fish in 5ft of water all year is where it comes in handy the most. Best money I've spent IMO.
I absolutely love mine, especially summer time windy ledge fishing. Sit on the ledge on 6' of water with them down casting into 25' of water and not worrying about the wind.
They've been worth every penny to me.

years ago i was like the start of this thread… power poles bla bla… just learn to use trolling motor right and save the money.. hated them use to chuckle at boats with them, even called them money towers.. lol.. then a buddy got one on his new legend.. just one.. it was ok i guess, i thought..still had to use the trolling motor due to the pivot etc.. wind blows here a lot in central tx… it was nice but really I've fished years without it...
well i got a new boat… it has 8 ft blades on it.. (iclass) and with the cmonster units..my thoughts have changed 120%.. just today a club member asked me whats one thing i must have on a boat, i surprising said power poles..it even shocked me.. but its true.. i use them all the time.. has it really helped my fishing? oh yes, before, catch one maybe throw a bouy or try to get back on spot to work it really good.. now its habit to hit the remote down as i fight a fish… even in deeper water ill use them to slow the drift a bit…(no i don't want the drift boards)… deep trees, ill lower them to catch a branch.. along riff raft lower them to act as a bumber if we are paralleling a bank.. so many uses.. and I've told a few ppl who wanted one.. don't get one get 2.. if u can't, save till you can, its worth it..
all in all im a converted anti power pole guy.. i hated them.. till, i really got to use them… and now can't see my self without them… its an advantage.. nuff said..
now how bout those talons… eeww yuk… lol…
