Re: etec gas mileage problems help (mccrary53)

I have a 06 E-Tec 225 ho and at wot I get 1.8 mpg and at 4600 rpm I get 4.0 mpg. I can not get any more than that And it seems that I put a gal. of oil in it once a month. I run at the XD-50 setting I did run at the XD-100 setting and at 53 hours I blew the motor so the more oil it gets the better off it is.

The experts will help you later but right off hand i'd say you are hurting yourself by using anything other that regular grade 87 octane gasoline.

    Welcome to the BBC.

If you can Please post your serial number maybe we can help.

There are a few things that may help with fuel and oil consumption...one is which map you are running, what temp the motor is running and what RPM you are turning the motor.

How does the average person calculate mpg of a motor on a boat?

You will need a GPS set for miles per hour and a laptop with the Evinrude Diagnostic Software hooked up to the motor. Then you can run the boat at various speeds and trim settings while recording the gallons per hour and the miles per hour. With a bit of basic math, you will have miles per gallon. EASY!

You can also purchase a FloScan unit to give you the fuel consumption, but they are not very accurate at low speeds since the E-TEC uses so little fuel at idle and off idle rpms.

Re: etec gas mileage problems help (SEAHORSE)

I do mine as an overall average. I go to the gas station, fill the tank to the brim, reset the mileage on my Lowrance 332, then run for the day. On the way home I stop at the same pump at the same station and top off again. Using the mileage recorded on the 332 and the amount of fuel it requires to top it off, I can then figure the average economy for the trip. I am finding an overall average of 4mpg in tournament conditions and a bit better than 5mpg if I am just out cruising....mind you a lot of my time (probably 50%) on my home lakes is spent at idle, so that really helps the mileage numbers looks better...

That is how I do it and you can't get any more accurate than that!
That gives you a true number of gals used and mpg.

When my Techo was fitting my fuel sender he went to extra trouble to make sure the it was vertical, could yours be horizontal and you are getting incorrect readings.

Since both of you guys are in the south on huge lakes maybe you use your boats differently than I do. If I calculated my mpg using the gas/fill before and after method and measured my distance traveled on GPS that would significantly understate my mpg. I probably travel 20% -30% of my distance under electric power and not my Etec. On Canadian shield lakes I might use my Etec for 30 mins a day and troll and drift for 12 hours, some guys idle for hours while drifting. I think the only accurate way to measure is the laptop hook-up method. Unless you put in full, drive a long distance and fill up at a marina and measure the trip with no fishing in between that would be accurate.

Re: etec gas mileage problems help (jamesshannon)

I have my gps set up so that it does not register any miles traveled at speeds less than 2mph...so any time on the trolling motor is not figured in.
