Went stump jumping with my Johnson!!

Found a rather large tree stump this past Saturday with my boat and motor running about 20 or so. Put a 3 foot crack and hole in the bottom of my boat and bent the propshaft and nicked the prop a little. Just want some help and what all may be damaged on the motor after a hit like that. The boat is at my local BRP shop and so far for the motor all that they say it needs is a propshaft and a good looking over. Just curious as to what is usually damaged when the prop and L/U hit something like this? The gearcase looks fine except for a little bit of a mark down the side of it where it deflected off of the stump. While limping the boat back to the trailer it had a severe vibration in it about 2,500 RPM's. Ol'e Johnson still hung in there though. It is a 99 j200pleen.

I'm assuming that you got your insurance agent involved. Do not, I repeat, do not let them just replace the bent propshaft. They need to install new gears as well and inspect the housing for any warpage. If the propshaft is bent and the prop is dinged up, those gears took a good blow as well.

I am speaking on this from experience. I spent the better part of a summer getting my lower unit replaced, because the dealer said all I need is a new propshaft after hitting something. Not!!!!

Don't think the warranty covers it, But hey if you don't tell anyone then, then no one will know.

Yes my insurance is involved. I figured that the hole L/U would need to be rebuilt, just hope my local shop here will do it for me!?!?! I also told them that the prop was not dinged up before, and it was'nt so, I dunno, just one bad weekend for me.

Thanks Mike, This happens alot since you can't see what's under the water. This sort of damage can vary widely, depending on many factors involved. Bottom line is this, complete D & R of case is 99.00, straighten P.S. is 29.00. If the Pinion & Forward gearset need to be replaced, add 199.00. Also hope & pray your housing is reusable! If no more damage is present than what was described, it should be O.K.
