    1997 488VS

Just bought my first Ranger! Love it, but have a few questions. It is a 1997 488VS Camanche with tamdem axle trailer. When towing with factory cover, I have trouble keeping it from lifting off. I notice there is hidden grommets down both sides. Are there straps I should be using to tie it to the trailer? The previous owner told me to turn off the electrical breaker reset when boat is not in use. Will the automatic bilge pump still work if I do this? I leave it at my dock covered and should not take on water, but you never know.

You will love that boat. Many people say that the 487/488 was the best boat that Ranger ever built. If you switch off the main power breaker in the rear compartment, the auto bilge will not work. Regarding the cover, yes, the sides need to be strapped tot he trailer. Lots of folks use bungee cords. The newer covers have webbed straps sewn in, but I think the older ones just had grommets for bungee cords.

Thanks for the info on straps for cover. I am going to try to make or buy some that are adjustable. Not real crazy about bungees because they seem to stretch over time. I have power on my dock, is it ok just to leave breaker on and plugged into 3 bank charger all of the time?

I recommend you do not tow with cover on.......potential to rub on fiberglass and marr finish...happened with my 95' Ranger 482vs especially around the back corners where the cover was pulled tight against the hull.

Very nice boat by the way!!! Congrats...

Sweet boat. Your gonna love it. I have a 96' 487 with the Original Travel cover. I do not tow with the cover on even though it was made for it. Not to sure about the ability to stay on at 70mph.

My 487 has built in straps on the cover 3 for the sides. I dont use it unless going on a long trips, used when I went to the Potomac and didnt have any trouble. I did get a cheap foam pool noodle and put over the winshield were the covers lays on it. Great looking ride also

I have a 95' 492VS. My bilge pumps work regardless of the breaker position. A quick way to test is to use a hose to put water in it with the breaker off. Both mine are on floats. I also do not trailer with my cover on.

Thanks for all input! I will not be towing much since I have a place on the lake where it will sit next to the dock ready to go most of the time. My next purchase is a lift to leave it on so I can keep it out of the water. I once towed a Four Winns from Florida to Ohio mostly in the rain with no cover. Took me weeks to get the black crap out of the carpet ans seats due to trucks and such.
