venting the oil tank

Seahorse,

On a different thread you talk about puncturing the membrane on the underside of the oil tank cap.I have read this before where this helps the initial smoke problem after starting.I get a fair amount of smoke after starting my engines ,1997 johnson 150 oceanrunners.The smoke goes away after the engine is warmed up and very little underway but if I could fix that initial smokeout it would be good.Is there any downside to this quick fix?Is it caused by simply a biuld-up of press. in the oil resevoir?Thanks in advance.....

The only downside I can think of is if the tank is in an unprotected area where rain, spray, garden hose, etc. can get a lot of water around the cap area. If the tank is exposed, installing it inside a battery box works well.

Thanks seahorse .... it sounds like a good fix to me.Engines run good just initially sometimes a little embarassing at the dock waiting for them to warm up.
