Roof canoe rack?

Anyone made a rack to carry their canoe on the roof of an suv? I am currently using my factory luggage rack but would like to come up with something better. Any ideas? I am all for home made redneck ingenuity

I'm thinking of something like this type for my Yukon XL instead of just ropes that I use..

Man I would snatch that right up. Looks like a decent price also.

Although not exactly what I had in mind. I was thinking about making myself a roof cargo basket/rack that could extend to carry my canoe. I guess I am just going to have to go for it and see what I come up with.

I've seen something like this before for hauling ski's and luggage. Awefully pricey though..

Yep that is pretty much what I am wanting. I think I am going to take off my factory luggage rack and use those mounting locations to fab up my own. I want to make some kind of extension I can put in for my canoe since my Explorer is kinda short.

I spent a lot of hours trying to find an affordable durable rack for my truck cab. I finally built this set up....

I used handle on demand suction cups with a "U" bolt and 2x4. I have had this set up for two years now, taken 2 trips over 200miles on the interstate, driven in storms and had no problems. All I need to do is clean the surface with a damp paper towel before applying the suction cups.

You could attach the 2x4 to your current factory rack just for safety with a small rope, but ultimately the two lines up front going to your tow rings and two lines in the back are going to keep your canoe on your vehicle and not sliding to one side or the other. The rack supports the weight and protects your vehicle from the boat.

Let me know if you have any questions I'll look for another site that has a lot of them on it and post it when I get to it.
