Stand Casting in a Canoe

Hi folks,
I've got a couple of small yaks which I use for playtime and fishing in headwaters, a bass boat for big water, and a Mad River canoe which I'm in the process of converting to a backwater boat with a 30# TM, rod sleeves and seat relocation. The canoe is too unstable for stand casting so my question is whether anyone here has installed outriggers on their canoe, either home-made or off the shelf, and if that improved their capabilities or hindered their retieves. Thanks for any input.

I am actually thinking about doing the same thing to my mad river adventure 14 for next spring.

Bowhunter, that package looks like it will do the trick. The outriggers don't appear long enough to interfere with retrieves but, from the photos, seem stout enough to support two standing fishermen with good stability. Let us know about your field test when you pull the trigger. These may work their way into a Christmas or Birthday wish list for me.

Will do, I also like these too, but this guy looks to be shutdown until spring, and I don't want to wait that long... Since my boat is now in winter storage, I want to run the rivers with my Old Town and my little 2hp Johnson... But these look "beefier"

Those do look "beefier", if only because they have two vertical posts connecting the floats to the outrigger bar. That should prevent the floats from torquing their way out of position. In the kits that I've seen, most use pvc tubes for this connection. What is unknown about either the Spring Creek or Canoe Outriggers kit is how the horizontal tube inside the float is attached to the vertical tubes to prevent torque, loosening and directional shift. For my money, while I like the additional security of the second vertical tube in the CO kit, dealing with a company that has multiple products like SC may give me a little more confidence than CO's one man shop.

I agree with you Skip, plus I've been watching some Videos on YouTube with the Spring Creek outriggers used with some Canoe Sailing rigs.. That to me puts just as much pressure on those units as my small 2hp Johnson would. I'm not looking to break any speed records in my Old Town, just enough speed to push me up river so that I can gently float back down fishing...

Anyway, I have good deal on those thru a local distributor, so I'm going to order them this week.

Looks like it's a fun little boat, Goat. Kinda resembles a sit-in double yak. I'm sure that will get some attention on this board, but i've got enough boats in my barn for now.

I got my birthday wish and received the Spring Creek outriggers with a universal receiver. I today ordered the 16" wheel receiver attachments to allow me to get up and down my hill to the lake. The outrigger arrangement is definitly cool, quite efficient, will not interfere with casts or retrieves, width is adjustable, and can be easily detached. I'll post pics when all is set up and ready to launch.

I am looking forward to how you like them. I would like to get a set for my mad river canoe. I am starting to get gutsy and working up the nerve to stand up in my canoe with out any kind stabalizing floats, but I just don't want to tip and loose all my gear. That would be bad.
