brake question

I have a 99 P3 and just put in a new master cylinder and in the process got to wondering what disengages the brakes when backing or do they have some pressure when trying to back.....did not see a lock out solenoid or nothing just a basic hyd surge system.....fill me in on how they work this is my first baot with trailer brakes.....

They have a small shoe and a large shoe on drum brakes, they also only press one direction and the brakes must be adjusted manually from behind the backing plate. You will not have a problem except on excessive inclines. Then you lock out the coupler at the hitch if you get in that situation. You can tape or bungee the release lever to prevent activation when the hitch pulls forward, as the release will cam into normal position when tension changes.

This is also similar as to why emergency brakes on drum assemblies have less pressure in reverse action.
