Strange, I have a 1990 Johnson GT150 that does the same thing ... tach works just fine 98% of the time then all of a sudden it stops?
Had the same problem not long ago - replace rectifier - fixed problem. (Is your battery dying?)

watch your volt meter when tach is not working. If it is not working to, replace rectifier
