86 Evinrude XP 150 looses power at WOT

My 86 XP 150, model number E150STLCD, looses power at full throttle after getting warm. New plugs, coils, one new power pack, spark on all six and compression good. Had it on the water today. Initially had great hole shot, ran up tp 5200 RPM for about 10 minutes. While at full throttle, rpm dropped to 4000. No more good hole shot, barely dragged itself up on plane.

Any thoughts on what needs fixed? I'm scratching my head.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

sounds like a gas line problem. my old johnson 150 did that to me. when i was runnin down the river, my gas ball was sucked tight.
cleaned the lines out and solved it.

Could also be your fuel pump going bad.

I would look and make sure that all the spark plug wires are still hooked up. I know it sounds dumb but I have done this myself and another friend of mine did this as well.

VRO is two years old. I'll check the plug wires, but I just replaced plugs and am sure they are all on and in contact. I'll check on the fuel line too.

It seems like it's loosing spark, especially when steering to the left (I know that sounds strange, but that is when I notice it). Only under load. Runs great on garden hose.

I was wrong on the coils, four new and two old that appear fine (no cracks) and both have spark at idle.

    Any more suggestions?

I was having numerous problems with my 88 150 xp....would not get past 4k on the water, on the hose it ran great but in the water with a load it would not go past 4k rpm.. changed the ing. systems piece by peice and it ended up being the stator and timer base....Give you a place to look.. Have someone do a check on the Stator and timer base using a multimeter and check the readings against the manual

Pull the small orange wires off the ignition coil primaries (small terminal) one at a time and check to see if the contact inside the boot is "dirty". The small pin on the coil and that contact should be as shiny as a new nickel. If you find a brown color that indicates arcing between the wire contact and the coil primary terminal. That issue will generally allow the motor to run normally for a brief time until the arcing causes too much resistance and the cylinder starts to misfire or drop out altogether. If any are dirty, clean the coil terminal and replace the connector on the end of the wire to correct. A small amount of dielectric grease will prevent this from recurring.

    Herman,

One more thing to check. I had an 85 XP which developed a simular situation. When whoever changed the VRO pump the last time, did they change the nipple which comes out of the crankcase? Crankcase pulses drive the VRO thru the attached hose. Many of the original engines had nipples which had SS scrubble inside which would clog with carbon, reduce pulses, which in turn reduced fuel pumping. Just a thought. I fought with symptions for 3 years before I found a Tech knowledgeable enough to ask about that nipple. Changed it myself and no more problems. Good Luck.

I swapped the port powerpack with the one I replaced last year and it ran quite a bit beter, just not there yet. Ordering a new powerpack and two coils today.

Now I will have two new power packs, six new coils, new plugs, clean carbs, new fuel filter, and clean 87 octane fuel in the tank. I have been tinkering with this for the better part of a year now and am eager to get it running right and catch some walleyes.

Thanks to all who helped out.
