    1995 150 intruder intermittant problem

Have a issue that the motor is cutting out at various RPM's on plane, it does this hot, cold short run, long runs. Does not shut motor down but will skip a beat for just a second and continue on sometimes reacurring and sometimes not. It is becoming a concern as it acts like maybe a fuel problem but don't want to get left on the water.

fuel filter is clean and a water seperator installed.

Any suggestions? Plugs are fine also.

Does the engine "jump" once when that happens, almost like you hit something small?

Can you feel the motor "jump" or skip through the shift lever?

Re: 1995 150 intruder intermittant problem (hitty)

Not sure if Seahorse has something else in mind but I had a friend with a 95 Eagle and he had the same problem, just a slight 'miss' for lack of a better word. When I went through it for him I found that the neutral switch was bad and would intermittently kill the one bank of cylinders on it's own while driving. It is supposed to do that to make it easier when you go from neutral to forward or reverse but not on it's own when driving.

Another guy had a more noticeable skip in his when driving down the lake, turned out to be adjustment for the gear selector cable was just marginal. The lower unit was not 100% in gear and would just pop out every now and then while under load, just a turn or two on the cable adjustment and the problem disappeared.

However, I must put in a disclaimer here, I am not a small engine mechanic but have learned just enough over the years to usually get myself into trouble These guys here have the real information and will help you out I am sure.

Re: 1995 150 intruder intermittant problem (SEAHORSE)

It actually feels like the motor temporarily loses power, 9/10 times it does it while on plane. When it does "skip" or "jump" it does feel like you hit something small. That is what I thought happened the first time it did it. When it does it I get no increase in rpms at all. in fact the other day it "skipped " several time in a few seconds and my rpm were slowly creaping down. I came off plane ran at idle for a few seconds went to get on plane skipped several times and would not come on plane, returned to idle ran at 2000 rpms under a load for a minute, went to try and get on plane again took off no problem never did it again that day. The best way I can describe it while on plane is if you pulled the kill switch and plugged it back in immediately. It is kind of frustrating because it does not do it all the time. Any other help is greatly appreciated. I am willing to call somebody on the phone and describe it a little more or talk about it the best I can. Thanks again in advance for any and all info, it all helps.

Check your cylinder temps. Could be a bad T-stat.

With your description I would look at the shift interrupter first and then check the primary leads on the coils, these are the small wires, look on the coil terminals, see if you notice any burnt spots.

You MAY have a pack and/or EET headed south, about the only way to be sure is to replace them BOTH and go for a boat ride however, these parts are not cheap nor returnable at most dealerships .....Helps to have a parts department that will work with you.

I had the samething happening to my 1997 (175 ) Intruder word for word and it was the power pack. Put the new power pack in and have not had a problem since.

Re: 1995 150 intruder intermittant problem (hitty)

    Well guys here's the scoop,
After talking to Rusty and Horace on the telephone they both gave me some very good information.Rusty's technical knowledge was awesome and Horace had a very similar problem with his motor. I ended up repacing the EET (electronic eye timing I think that is what it is) and the power pack. Rusty talked me through how to change the parts and I was done in about 25 minutes for both parts. I now have 5 solid long days on the water and the motor has not hesitated one time. I am still keeping my fingers crossed but I think that the problem is solved. I want to thank everyone for their help and information it really helped out alot. This has got to be the best informative sight on the web with alot of great people that frequent it. Thanks again to all that helped.
