    1st bass boat...G3 175 or Triton VT17

I'm in the market for my first (new to me) bass boat. Going the aluminum route I think is best at this time. I have been looking and I've found an 06 Triton VT17 and my buddy is selling his 01 G3 175. Both are nice but only ever been in the G3. VT w/ Merc 50hp 2 stroke is $4k and the G3 w/ Yamaho 50HP is $5K

    Thoughts on either and why?

    Thanks

Get in both and see how they feel, is there enough space for you and who you will be fishing with, Is the deck space large enough, hows the storage? What size is the livewell, hows the overall shape fit you. Then look at the condition of everything, is it beat to death, was it taken care of, does everything work. Look at the welds or rivits good and at the keel, make sure there arn't any issues. Do alot of looking over on them and pick which one fits you better and good luck with your buy.

If I were buying another aluminum boat I'd pay the most attention to the size of the front deck and the storage layout. I'd also look at which had the better trolling motor setup and electronics.

Don't know about the Triton - but owned a G3 Eagle 175 and loved the boat. I sold it to my best friend and still spend a lot of time in the rig. It's a super solid boat. G3 really has had zero issues with that hull except for a high speed porpoise with the 90hp - and the 50 won't have that problem. The smaller Yamaha carb engines are extremely bulletproof and will last a lifetime with minimal care and maintenance.

The triton sounds like a better buy. Also check the decks. I'm pretty sure the triton is wood free where as the g3 may have some wood floors. If that matters to you.

I have an 02 G3 Pro 175. Has a 70 Yamaha, 2 stroke. I like it except for the porpoising '. Good to fish out of, front deck a little small. obviously not the most stable boat out there. But you get what you pay for. Just bought a friends 99 Javelin, it was more like what I was used to . May sell the G3 this spring. I also have a 15 ft Duracraft for small water, so I don't really need the g3. Anyone have any idea how to rid the porpoising. I tried one of the dolphin tails, made no difference. Only there when trying to run wide open.

Smart Tabs will remove all or most of the porpoise. I tried everything...props, welds on bottom of boat, whale tail, these tabs did it for me.

I was able to get rid of the porpoising on my Lowe 180 by adding a J/P.

if it was me go with the 06 and the merc your friend might give you a better deal but i found it is best not to buy things, work for, or things such as this from friends if something goes wrong puts a bad taste in your mouth

Look very closely at the welds on the inside of the triton transom.

The triton would be my choice. Both good boats though.

My first boat was a g3 175. I loved that boat. Fished very well. It would go in really shallow water where glass boats couldn't.

Personally, I'd go with the Triton. I don't know much about the G3 but buying a boat or other major purchase from a friend doesn't always work out very well.

I dont know if price or your percieved inexperience (or something other) is the reason for wanting a 17' boat, but if it's just that you think you need to start with a small boat to learn with, go ahead and get the biggest one you can afford.. I've never met a boater (but have read about 1 or 2) who didnt want a bigger boat.. Just something to think about! Good luck!

I think you will like either one but I would for sure take the one with best front deck.
