    Allison info?

Hey all- this is my first post here at BBC. I joined specifically to talk about Allison boats. Here's the scoop...

I'm active duty military and a lifelong admirer of Allison boats. I say admirer because they have a pocket busting price tag for a guy on a modest income. My uncle has a 2007 BasSport Xb-21 2+2 and with engine I swear he's in it like 60grand- well beyond my price range and then some. But lately I'm starting to see some early to mid 90's models that are actually within my price range. I really truly have my heart set on an xb2002 and have a couple questions.

    1. I plan to fish this boat in tournaments. Anything I should know or consider about this model when thinking along those lines?

    2. Can it be set up with the co-angler riding directly behind the pilot when running the boat? I've seen several different arrangements.

    3. What kind of speeds can I expect to get running a 150? To pull this off I need to run a smaller motor than I'd like but my pocket can't handle a 225.

Any advice or suggestions or whatever is greatly appreciated. I'm in the market now folks so let me know what's out there. I have approx 15k to spend.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bryan

    Re: Allison info? (HookFynn)

First off Bryan. Welcome-- and my special thanks for serving Thanks for your Time, commitment, and sacrafice...As far as I'm concerned every day I'm free is vetrans day.

I think for tournament fishing My suggestion would be a 2003. However that is just my opinion..No doubt the 2003 is more fisherman friendly. But you can get along with the 2002.
I think all of the 02's an some of the 03's you can put the passenger in the middle behind you...I know my 2003 had the side slide seat and i liked it best running both of us in the center.
Some tournament trails are very sticky about the horsepower regulations.. We got by for years with the "Not coast guard rated" issue if over 20 ft in length. I know FLW along with BASS and there affiliates..the H-power rule reads " it must have a horsepower rating either by the boat maker or the Coast guard and it can not exceed that rating". A lot of guys have never had issue with it...However if you ever get protested.your done
You should be able to find a good boat for 15g I found a fireman friend- the buy of the century last year..it was a 96 2003. with a 2005 225 Pmax the mtr was barley broke in. for a little less tha 11g's

Good luck they might get real cheap with these gas prices

    Re: Allison info? (fishnfireman)

i second what he said. i used to have a 02 and loved it that boat would fly but when it came to fishing well i would have rather have had a big john boat. i went swimin way too much. now the 03 is alot better i found mine sitin at a boat shop had been there over a yr and got it cheap. so just look around and wait for that deal.

    Re: Allison info? (allisonxb2003)

Thanks gentlemen. There's just something so appealing to the eye when it comes to the xb2002. Not that the 2003 isn't gorgeous also, I just seem to prefer the 2002.

I've heard a couple people mention going swimming from the 02. Any particular reason? I'm a slender guy, 6ft 150ish and pretty nimble as such. Is it a balance issue or just simply running out of boat and walking into the drink?

P.S. Can the 2003 be rigged up center steer and centerline passenger?

I've heard a couple people mentioning the 115 stroker. I wonder what kind of speed vs. fuel economy you would get. I'd be happy if my boat would do 65 with it, but I don't know if that's possible.

Also- any idea what length the rod lockers are in the 2002?

    Re: (allisonxb2003)

Welcome to the Allison board Bryan.
These guys are giving you some great information here.

    Jeff,
Sounds like you need your scuba gear on while fishing. You must have picked up your balance ability from Bruce.

    Re: (HookFynn)

If you fish by yourself the xb2002 is ok, but the unexpected moves of your partner in the back make it hard to fish when you are trying to keep your balance. Like the man said, its like fishing out of a jon boat!!!

I have an xb2002, and it is just a toy for big numbers. I have fished out of it one time and that was probably the last.

One great thing about the xb2002 is the you can cruise at a lower rpm and still out run everyone and get better fuel mileage. I ran next to my buddies 99 xb02/225x promax while I was in my 20xd Bullet/225x promax, I was on the rev limiter to keep up with him while he was not even at 6k rpm. He can prop way down for exceptional holeshot and mid range and still smoke me.

    HookFynn,

You'll be fine with a 2002. It'll run high 70's, properly set up, with a 150 and be "sticker legal" for tournaments.

Try to buy one with the small console and center steering, that way you'll have more room to get up on the front deck. If you get this version, your partner will ride directly behind you, in tandem. This is the best setup for tournament fishing in a 2002.

Following are a paste of FLW's 2008 Horsepower rules and BASS
They changed the wording on these 2 years ago so there would be NO QUESTION about boats that do not have a maximum horsepower rating. Both of them added a sentenance to read 'MUST HAVE" a max horsepower rating... I fought this battle with FLW for years becuase they had a very lucrative trail I liked to fish here in Texas {TTT} for 3 years I had a letter from them stating I could fish my 2003/225 Mainly because the wording about HP was open to interpretation----not anymore--- when i first got the new 21 I had a 225 on it. As luck would have it that was when they changed the wording to read "MUST HAVE" a max rating..There exact words when I called to get a new letter was--- SORRY--soon after Darris put out the new sticker with a 225 max rating..all was well...... However as of 2008 FLW does not have the TTT trail..That coupled with the fact we have plenty of good paying tournaments out here that do not have the HP reg's...I decided to he!! with it and bought me a 300

Here are FLW's ---Maximum horsepower for all outboards used in tournament competition will be 250 horsepower, not to exceed the horsepower capacity set forth on the "Maximum Capacities" placard described below.
Each boat must have a clearly legible “Maximum Capacities” (or comparably titled) plate that includes a maximum horsepower rating affixed to the boat by the manufacturer.
The horsepower of the outboard engine must not exceed the maximum horsepower capacity specified on this plate or the 250 horsepower maximum set by FLW Outdoors.
MAXIMUM HORSEPOWER FOR ALL OUTBOARD MOTORBOATS USED IN OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT PRACTICE AND IN TOURNAMENT COMPETITION WILL BE 250 HP. Horsepower cannot exceed the limitations set by the U.S. Coast Guard. When required, each boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard horsepower-rating plate attached to the boat by the manufacturer. The horsepower of the outboard engine must NOT exceed the rating specified on this plate nor the horsepower maximum set by BASS

I know a lot of people have fished under these rules with few problems. Most of the smaller affiliates will let it slide simply because they need entries..But for me if there is some big money on the line I would get it IN WRITING..so there is no question. Cause I guarante If you win a large purse and some poor loser is familiar with the situation---they will file a protest...this I know from being a non paid tournament director for 5 years. There are a lot of whiney basurds out there.

I'm only telling a newby this so It does not cause some of the problems a few of us have lived thru.

While I'm on this soap box I still don't see why Darris will not put a 250 rating on that new hull. In my opinion and I can back it up because I have talked to several who were ready to buy a new 21--UNTIL they saw the sticker.

    Re: Allison info? (HookFynn)

Get you an XB2002, rig a 150 Yamaha VMAX on it. They are a REAL good match. If you want to go faster have a Hydro-Tec Phase II kit installed and they will not be able to tell its modified.
