Aerodynamics play a big role in Allison design. A trolling motor turned at a angle creates more drag I would suspect. It has zero affect on boat handling while on the t-motor. Also , atleast with the older stuff the breakaway on the troller worked best if it was mounted straight. I may be totally wrong but thats my guess.
I may have ALS but ALS does NOT have me.

Allison laminates an aluminum plate in the area under a straight mounted troll motor, which gives the motor extra security and strength. Also, to mount it the way you suggest would require shimming because it's not level that way. Incidentally, I mounted my troll motor, on a 1985XTB as suggested. It really did well positioning the boat for fishing---that's a fact.

Thank You for the responses, but I returned to the Allison web site and they answered this question for me after I read up on their site. Your answers were correct and I appreciate the fact that you answered them.
