    Nordskog GPS Digital Speedometer Question

    I recently purchased an Allison XB-2003 with a Nordskog GPS digital speedo. When I test drove the boat, it took us a LONG time to get it working. The gps antanae is not permanently mounted yet, so we had to hold it in our laps. Anyway, the boat has a toggle switch mounted under the speedo. At first, the speedo reads "NoDat" or something like that. Then you flick the toggle switch in some special sequence and it is supposed to work. I cant get it going. I can get it to show all zero's, sometimes it will show 800, sometimes 2400, and a few other round numbers. Sometimes it reads 14.3-14.6 when you are barely moving. Sometimes it shows what looks to be like the correct speed, but only for a split second. Usually, I just put the puck back under the dash where it was and ignore it.

    I tried putting the puck on the front deck, in full view of the sky, for a long time hoping it would lock into some GPS satellites, but it never did.

    Any suggestions on what is going on here? Thanks.

    I'm not sure why it wouldn't be picking up the satellites. "NoDat" would be that it hasn't locked into satellites yet. The toggle switch toggles between speed, rpm, volts (and compass if I remember correctly). I only use mine for speed. When you've made a run and want to know the top speed, you hold the toggle switch and it will show the highest speed ran. (Make sure you check this before you turn the motor off otherwise it's lost.)

    The 800, 2400, etc. that you're seeing would be rpms. The 14.3-14.6 would be volts.

    Only suggestion I have is to mount the gps antenna (could use some double sided foam tape temporarily until you decide where you want it), to see if that corrects the problem.

    I've got mine mounted under the windshield on my Gambler, could have put it under the console (it will work there), but thought it looked kinda neat under the console.

    Re: Nordskog GPS Digital Speedometer Question (Al from Canada)

    Al hit the nail on the head with his info.. Not sure why it's not working.. Did ya try all the obvious, ck plugins and wire connections??

    Black= ground
    Red=power
    Green goes to toggle (don't matter which leg)
    Purple= power to face light
    Gray=tach
    White=optional signal course

    The gps reciever has an internal battery that recharges during normal use if power is hooked up.. It can discharge if power is not supplied to it within a 3 week period.

    Recharging time will vary but in extreme cases it will be 10-15 minuites

    Next thing would be to call Norskog 714-991-9999 and ask for Technical support,, Hrs are between 9 and 5.....www.nordskogperformance.net

    Thanks guys, good advice for sure. I eventually got a link to the instruction manual to my speedo on the internet. It explains everything. This is one of those occasions where I was close but no cigar. I kept flicking and flicking and just passed up the setting I was looking for over and over and over. I'm gonna check it out again with the instruction manual in hand next time out and see if I can get it figured out. It does not seem like rocket science, now, but is certainly not intuitive if you don't know what you are looking at. Now that I see some explainations, it all makes sense.

    Re: Nordskog GPS Digital Speedometer Question (Largemouthlou)

    i had a nordskog analog gps for my boat. I ordered it from nordskog, wired it up correctly ( and even tripple checked to make sure it was right)never could get it to work right. Sent it back and told them I didn't want the pos because it would't work. They tested it inside the shop and said that it tested out OK, I asked them if they took it outside to see if it would lock on the sattelites. That was my problem I could'nt get it to lock on the sattelites. He said that he would have to get somebody to hook it up in there car(for some reason this guy did not drive to work) and drive around and test it.I haven't talked to them since'

    I ordered a livorsi and it works great.

    Re: Nordskog GPS Digital Speedometer Question (rambo274)

    My unit sometimes will take several minutes to lock on the the sats's..I do believe it is all in sat positioning at that moment..I originally thought it may be weather related..but no longer consider that idea..

    My display actually says NOSAT , self explanatory..

    Once my unit locks on at first start it normally doesn't do that the rest of the day..

    Most current GPS units grab signals from multi sats.. I do believe these units are not near as advanced in multi signal reception, therefore resulting in delays in signal processing, depending on atmospheric conditions, etc.

    Im also pretty sure that the Livorsi is an identical unit internally..

    Re: Nordskog GPS Digital Speedometer Question (igs65)

    I tried mine again this past weekend with 4 pages of Nordskog instructions in hand. Never did get a GPS sat signal. Bummer. I may just wait to get a new fishfinder with integral speedometer...

    I don't know about internally,but mine uses a totally different type reciever. The reciever that come with the livorsi looks like one from lowrance. Also i have the speedometer with the pointer', round like a car, and when it is locked on it shows that it is locked on in a totally different manner.
