Blowing out on the hole shot (XB 2003)

Once I punch it and the bow drops, I blow out and rev +5K and have to back down to regain a bite. My current prop is a brand new 28 Quad IV that Todd custom cut for me. Same problem with a 27 Allison cut Trophy. I also have a 26 Chopper that doesnt seem to be as bad.

Im at 1" above the pad right now with 14" of setback. Should I drop down 1/4" to alleviate this problem?

    Merc 225X. 3 Optima batteries.

    Rob,
I would sure try it- my last boat was a 2003 that had a 225 pmax then a 280 bass.
I ran my boat heavy compared to most Ally owners and it liked from 1/4 to 1 inch below.
I have had some props that would spin to 5 grand or maybe even a little more. But they would bite- pull the rpm back down a little then launch like a funny car. Just keep your foot in it.
Call Todd- if you have not- he will talk your leg off and he has an Allison.

I have the same 2003/225X combo, try it at 1/4" below the pad and see how that works. Then make minor +/- adjustments from there. Good luck, GAR

If your pad is stock, you appear to be very high. 1/4" below should be around the sweet or maybe even with the pad. An Ally foil would also help.

    Hey Rob,
Are you sure you're measureing correctly? If you're taking a straight edge off the bottom of the pad and letting it angle down accross the lip of the pad it will give you a false reading. The best way to measure is to hold a level on the pad while someone lets the bow of the boat down with the tongue jack, make sure the level is in the front of the lip. Next, remove your prop and level the prop shaft with the engine trim, now measure up from the floor to the bottom of the lip on the rear of the pad then to the center of the nose cone or prop shaft, (either should measure the same) of course you need to do this on a level floor. The highest you can normally run an xb-2003 with a 14" setback is 1/4" below the lip, otherwise there is no lift and lots of blowout. With a stationary jack plate running @ elevated heights, most any prop will turn loose a certain amount when the bow comes down due to the prop surfacing & sucking air from the surface, 5-6000 rpm's are normal, there are things that can be performed on a prop to help this situation if the ventilation is excessive. With a hyd. plate, you can drop the plate down for a good holeshot then raise it for higher speeds but this will cause some props to bogg down and be sluggish until the boat planes off.

Thanks everyone. Lee, I thought I was measuring correctly but maybe not. Sure appreciate the info. I think it's time to trailer that boat up to you!
