I drive my Allison like I drive a golf ball

I need a little help and the title is what happened when I tried a CLE on my boat. I raised the motor up to level to the bottom just to see what would happen. It hooked.

Ok now I started slow and cautious running 60 for a few minutes. I noticed nothing too different than when I had my stock lower unit other than maybe a little different noise and more steering torque.

I have on a 27 pitch trophy with a little cup. I have never been able to turn this prop but it would run the boat up over 71 but only 5270 rpm's. Now I'm sitting there watching the boat climb past 74 and the rpm's are just under 5500. Steering has much harder to hold on to. I just decide to slow down and as I start to take the throttle off it takes a hard left. From over 70 to 20 in what seems like a couple of seconds.

Ok, I have heard these need a nose cone to help with the hydrodynamics but I'm not going that fast am I? I tried it again after lowering the motor 1 inch with pretty much the same results. I did also notice I could run the boat at speed with this setup with less trim.

I guess I need a nosecone. I am going to try and lower the motor a little more and see if that helps. It will still be higher than the stocker could run.

Now, I have never been accused of being smart. What should you do. I am sore from trying to hold myself into the seat. My left arm is sore and both legs. I am tempted to put the stock lower back on and just fish.

    Hey David,
The cle will run on your boat but is not needed @ those speeds, it sounds like it needs to have Allison mods., weld in tab, water inlet & nose alterations. I would suggest running it between 1/4 & 3/4" below the pad, and you are correct, not as much trim. If I were you, I would add Mercury water inlet scoops to your stock unit which will allow you to run it higher and still maintain water pressure. Also a 26 should be faster with higher rpm's. Robbie can perform the mods. on your cle if needed, 804-706-1847, his shop is right behind mine.
The reason it took a lefty on you is that you were having to hold it to the left then when you dropped the throttle, all torque went away and naturally it went that way. Now that you know what it feels like just before it goes arround, you should be able to catch it before it happens again. Also make sure there is no slack in your steering. Oh yea, you need solid mounts when running the engine @ those heights, the engine is torqued over due to the mounts then when you drop the throttle it flops over to the left, hence, left turn. Probably a combination of the mounts and torque. Be careful!

Re: I drive my Allison like I drive a golf ball (Props4u2)

Thanks for the pointers Lee. I am going to take it a little slower now and get it right. I took it fishing yesterday and I'm not so sure the CLE will be my everyday lower. I hadn't thought about with the lakes so low I had to run the trolling motor coming out of the boat ramp and back in. The last open ramp on Cedar Creek.

The torque tab needs doing for sure as well as getting more water through those two little holes in the intake.

I've got to go slow as my fishing partner is my daughter and I don't want her to give up fishing because she is afraid of the boat. The stock lower unit has the scoops on it and it does pretty good. Its not quite as fast as the CLE but works good for fishing.

I'll get it together. I'm going to pull it and get the impeller changed out. The welded torque tab I'm guessing is prefered to the add on? The water pressure was only 16 at full throttle even with it buried and I don't know its history so I'll get some peace of mind and do that.

I wonder if Santa can get this done for me in time for Christmas.

    Dave,
The weld in torque tab is much more effective than the rivet or screw on type.
Hope Santa's Elf's hear ya, LOL.
