6.2 liter vs 5.3 liter chevy motor

Is it worth the extra money for the 6.2 liter motor? I am looking at new trucks and a couple have the 6.2 liter. I am mainly going to be using the truck to pull the boat. Well at least 60% of its use for now will be pulling the boat. Should I forget about it and just get the 5.3 liter or should I really consider the 6.2? Gas milege isn't really that big of a deal in the decision since I have a company truck to use for pretty much everything else.

prefer crew cab 4x4 but would look at ext cab 4x4

If you go crew cab, get the 6.2 liter. What year model truck? Some newer trucks have the 6speed trannys and do pretty good with the 3.42's or 3.08 gears in them. However if you go with a truck that has the older 4speed tranny, get the 3.73 with 6.2 liter, because it will be a beast. When the bigger engine first came out it was a 6.0 liter which had 340 horses. Then they went 6.2 liter and it was even stouter. If you go with a 5.3 liter crew cab it will suffice and get the job done, however i think you will be more happy with the 6.2 liter and since mpg aint an issue with you right now, may as well go with the bigger motor.

I have 2009 Crew Cab with the 5.3 and 3.42 gears..Z71 G80 but 2wd. It does fine pulling. It is not a powerhouse, but pulls my Tr 19 just fine.

I would post my mileage...and have before...but really don't like some callin BS on it. Needless to say...better than I hoped it would be.

If gas $$ is not an issue....a bigger motor is always more fun.

I would go with the 6.2 and the 6 speed tranny. When you order the 6.2, you also get the 9.5 (14 bolt) rear end with disc brakes. The 5.3s come with drum brakes on the rear. You also get other heavy duty components such as sway bars, springs, coolers, and charging system. I think the mileage towing will actually be better than with the 5.3. The 6.2 has awesome power.

My 5.3 AV does good pulling my stratos it has 300 HP the 6.2 has 405 HP and will pull alot better since gas isn't a big deal get the 6.2. Or just get a diesel.

I don't think so. I get anywhere from 14-17 towing..depending on speed, hwy vs in town, terrain.

    Re: (SkidMark)

Why do these posts always end up in an arguement? I was just giving my opinion based on many years of towing experience. I currently have an 05 Yukon with the 5.3 and 3.73 gears. It gets great mileage on the highway, 19.5-21, depending on the trip. I also have a 2012 Yukon Denali with the 6.2, 6 speed, and 3.42 gears. It gets 18.5- 20 mpg on the highway. Towing my phoenix 921, the 5.3 gets 12-14 mpg, and the 6.2 gets 14-16 mpg. So yes, way.

    Re: (alabamaphoenix)

no argument. I wish I had the 6.2. All the guys I have talked to locally that have the 6.2 get about 12-14 without a boat and around 11 towing. They may have lead in their foot tho... The higher the gas gets...the more I drive like an 80 yr old man. I need to hook up to that 921 tooooo....I drool over those fine rigs....told Gary Clouse that too face to face...you lucky fella.

I have a 2011 Silverado. It's got a the 5.3 with the six speed transmission. 3.42 rear end. I like the truck--plenty of power for me. I tow on a regular basis because of my job. It can handle loads up to 7,000 lbs without issues. The only time i wish i had the 6.2 or duramax is when i tow something heavier than 7k lbs. This is VERY rare. Therefore, i think i am in the right truck for my needs.

Pick the right truck for YOUR needs. If you are towing a bass boat on level ground, i'd say you could get away with the V6. If you have hills, get the small V8. Towing more than a bass boat--get the 5.3 or larger.

I just got a new truck with the 6.2. After having a few pickups with the 5.3 I will never have another one with the small motor. I see no drawbacks with the 6.2. The 6.0 had bad milage but with the 6.2 I am getting similar numbers to my 5.3. The 6.2 actually feels like a motor that belongs in a pickup compared to my weak 5.3 pickups. This motor is the first gas motor that I would say is better than the old 8.1 I had in a 2001. I suggest you get it, you will NEVER regret it.

    Re: (NESportsman519)

I've only heard one person regret getting a 6.2 and that was because my FIL had he same AFM problem my 5.3 did only he was out way out of town. Cadillac gave him a loaner but he had to make a several hour trip to go back and pick it up. He traded it for a Mercedes that day and has owned two trouble free ML's since.

At the time the 6.2 wasn't offered in the Avalanche but we did have the 6.0 in the Escalade the wife was driving. Not much difference in MPG but a BIG difference in tow power when you hooked the boat up. If I were ordering new it would be a 6.2 all the way. There isn't enough difference in real world MPG to split hairs on. If you are worried about that between the two IMO you can't afford the new truck.

Re: 6.2 liter vs 5.3 liter chevy motor (cosmo6345)

I bought a new 2010 Sierra crew with the "extreme towing package" which included the 6.2l, 6 speed, 3.73 rear locking and a bunch of other heavy duty stuff. I got out of an 04 Sierra crew with 5.3l and 4 speed. Mileage towing at 70-75 is identical but the increase in power in all ranges is astounding. You won't regret the 6.2. The only reason I got the 6.2 is that the 8.1 is no longer offered.

Re: 6.2 liter vs 5.3 liter chevy motor (cosmo6345)

just my opinion but I recently bought the chevy 6.2L and by far it is worth it. I too buy the truck mainly for pulling my bass boat and it does great. Others in my club have the 5.3 and their engine works harder than mine and I get just as good of gas milage as they do cause I am not working as hard. Kind of like having a 150 or 200 under on the back of the boat and I have a 250 that again is not working as hard. Also a key feature is the 3:73 rear end. Those that say a 5.3 is enough powere more than likely never had a 6.2L. My last truck I traded in had the 6.0L. Good luck and do yourself a favor and go with the 6.2L

Re: 6.2 liter vs 5.3 liter chevy motor (Puma Jim)

6.2 All the way. MY 2010 has the 3.42 rear end and pulls like no tomorrow. There probably is a slight difference with the 3.73 but its probably not worth mentioning. The first gear is super low....like 4.03:1 so it is stout off the line. My mileage is within spitting distance of a 5.3 which is awesome considering it has roughly 90 additional horse and 80 ft lbs of torque more than a 5.3
