Honda Civic Hybrid. I had one and it got 43-47 mpg. I traded it in and have a regular Civic now and get 36-39.

Re: 40+ mpg car (Yatesville Junkie)

The Jetta diesel is about 55mpg. Most gassers that say 40 I've found are really around 36-38 mpg under ideal driving conditions.

The focus, fiesta, and cruze are really closer to 36 than 40 on the HWY.

The hybrids for 3k more just don't payoff to buy. Hybrids are not a true value to the added fuel mileage in the city only.

That 2013 Fusion is a nice looking machine!

May not even need the hybrid option as they are offering an I4 Ecoboost engine that should be close to 40 mpg - I haven't found offical mpg data released yet, but everyone is speculating somewhere around 35 to 40

I think the hybrid version is supposed to get about 47 mpg

I wish VW would put that same motor in the CC...

I had a 1968 Fiat 850, two seater. It got 40 mpg. But, I don't think my fat butt could get into one of those now!

    Re: (Jeff Hahn)

I have found it curious for years how we have so much trouble producing cars that get 40 mpg. Funny thing is, I owned a 1980, yes a 1980 Mustang with a 4 cylinder engine and manual transmission that consistantly got 40 mph on the highway for years.

And that was with all the old technology !!!!!!!!

Sure seems funny to me that we don't have more on the road today that would get 40 or better with all our complicated technology which makes these cars and trucks so expensive to buy and repair.

I purchased, for my daughter, a Hyundai Accent 4 months ago. She drives it to and from college, mostly highway. So far, averaging 41.30 mpg...hard to beat the warranty too.

I think you have the right idea to buy a fuel efficient automobile, but in my honest opinion, I would stay away from any type of hybrid automobile. Smug people who drive Prius & other hybrids are really putting around town on an itty-bitty gasoline engine. Battery technology is not robust enough presently to compete with a bang for the buck, fuel efficient automobile. The cost of a hybrid vehicle is excessive. Chevrolet's Volt goes 35 miles on one charge!!!! That's putrid & a joke to the American people!!!!!

You are so right !!!!! Too Soon for all this. Technology is not there yet. It will be some day. Just quit pushing it down our throat before it's ready.
