    Local Tackle Shop Prices ?

A new tackle shop opened up here and I went in to check it out.

I understand the idea of overhead and what-not, but why are they 1.00- 2.00 higher priced on lures than pretty much anywhere I can buy these lures on line?

I also understand that he does need to pay shipping on these lures but alot of sponsors here on BBC offer free shipping on orders over 50.00 so there goes that.

I would love to support local buisinesses, he says he can order anything i want, and it would save me shipping but at those prices, I can better afford to have my stuff shipped in from somewhere else and it would almost be foolish for me to spend that extra money unless i was in a bind for something and needed it today.

Just seems to be a trend here in the area with local tackle shops. They open, are way overpriced, and then close up after a couple years.

Anyone else see this trend in thier areas? And do they really need to be so high priced?

same with the places around where i used to live...no tackle shops where i live now but when i used to live in Blythe everything was a good $1.50-$2.00 more and rods and reel's were $10-20 more. i never bought from them. i did just as you, gave them a shot but i'm not going to pay that much more for the same thing i can get somewhere else.

That was the trend here for a long time. A couple years ago a new shop opened and this guy has some of the best prices I can find. Beats Wal-Mart on just about everything and is right in line with TW. I buy from him anytime I get a chance.

they are a little higher around here also, but the sad thing is if you don't buy from them we will be buying our tackle from a retail giant instead of a tackle shop.

The convenience of walking into a nearby tackle store and leaving with what you want is worth something. How much depends on the person..Large store, large inventory seems to be a little cheaper on everything then a small store with small inventory ..A buck or 2 high per bait seems high to me..

+ 1 and it's worth my time, to not having to wait for my on-line order and taking a chance it being lost in the mail or damaged by a carrier.

Unfortunately the local tackle shop cannot survive if you just buy you cheaper items from them. Without sales of the more expensive, higher markup items the store will go under. If you buy hooks from him, but reels and rods on-line, you may as well not bother using him, because the business will fail. The last ten years have been the hardest years to be in a retail business in the history of retail. the internet has opened up opposition to your store in every house with a computer. Sadly, the small local tackle shop is destined for the scrap heap.

My local shop is pretty fairly priced on almost everything. He even sells rods and reels about $20-$30 below retail.

I asked him if he intended on getting in on the on-line business, It appears tha anyone in retail would have to have a backgroung internet buisness to keep thier costs at a level where they could be competitive.

He said he was planning on it but I didnt mention the fact that I thought his prices were high.

Re: Local Tackle Shop Prices ? (C-riggVA)

With the advent of on-line shopping, quick shipping, larger, commercial shops, the smaller tackle stores are always going to be up against it.

First off, the amount of product they can maintain is not going to be near as complete as those larger stores. The small business man has to rely on his knowledge of the local waters and have on hand what he thinks will sell. As has already been stated, if you need something right now you will pay a couple of dollars more for it right then and there.

Secondly, the small tackle shop is not going sell nearly the same amount of product as the larger stores. Therefore he has to charge more in order to survive. This unfortunately is going to lead to their ultimate demise. I know two local shops that are struggling to make it right now. I really don't see either of them lasting too awful much longer.

You may be right Dale, but we're working our tails off here to offer the Guntersville Lake area a top quality walk in store while also offering a lot of great deals online. It's the only way we can make it.

It is really hard to compete in this business though, and that is a fact. We are grateful for all the support we receive from BBC as it has been an important part of keeping us up and running.

The small guy also doesnt have the buying power of the giant or the big online guy. For example,
Bass pro buys yamamoto Senkos for $3.20 and sell for $$7.99. (Huge zillion dollar overhead)
Online giant buys for $3.70 and sells for $5.99 (less overhead)
Little guy buys for $4.50 and sells for $6.99 so he can make a small margin and we all think we are getting screwed.

I dont know what your little guy is charging for most things but i promise he isnt making as much as what Bass Pro or Cabelas makes on most things. And he is buying groceries at your local store when he gets off work and pays property tax on his home and building. Bass Pro likely got a tax free sweetheart deal just to move in. Consider all those things. I sell a lot online but i like nothing better that going in a local tackle store. I stop and buy every time i see one

Re: Local Tackle Shop Prices ? (cougarcat22)

Very simple and very approximate numbers for you. For a start, you need $100,000 up front to buy stock and set up your little store.

    Now expenses every week are:

    Rent $300.00
    Power/water etc. $20.00
    Insurance $50.00
    Wages $360.00 (2 @ $6/hr 30 hrs/week)
    Advertising $20.00
Your own wage $1000.00 (You'll be working 70 hours a week)

That comes to $1750.00 per week.

With 15% mark-up you need to sell $11,666.66 each week to break even, without taxes. You could double that number if you want to pay yourself back your $100,000, or even more if you had to borrow the money to get started.

Yes, I know some of those numbers are not correct, some will be high and some will be low, but really, who wants to start up a little tackle shop now?

I would be happy to pay a little more. My local shop just closed in the last 3 months. It was nice to be able to see some of the tackle before i made the purchase. They really kept up with all of the latest stuff. But it's hard to compete with online stores that don't have to pay for a store front..

My local shop of choice is a little shop that is attached to the side of a Citgo station. Nothing fancy but he has alot of good stuff and has that little store packed. His prices are pretty fair often with in pennys of major retailers. He seems to do well selling live bait in addition to everything else. Last I heard, he was looking into online business aswell.
