I've never done it Darin, but my youngest daughter and her husband used to go on those trips quite often...until they became parents.

My BIL is way into it (with his kids). I've found around 50 but I can't get excited about it.

well it was brought up at a recent rescue meeting...a way to have a outing that incorporated geo-caching.
I told the folks I would ask around and try to come up with some ideas...

Try tokeep this as short as possible... but there are two things the rescue is working on:
    1. events that are not fundraisers, just "FUN-raisers" ( dont say it...I did not come up with the corny a$$ "FUN-raiser" idea) to give our folks experiences together that are not about $$$$$
    2. ways to incorporate other people from outside the ranks of people whom have rescued dogs from us.

One thing that was brought up was geo caching with your dog.
For the friggin life of me I cannot figure out a way to incorporate the dogs.

I guess I am not really sure how the whole geo caching things works well enough to work this out.

So the idea is you find the cache and then leave something for the next person is that it?
So what is in the caches exactly?

The only idea I can come up with is to use the caches to involve the dogs. How, I am not really sure...I dont think treats will hold interest too long...but maybe if the caches were treats as well as coupons for doggie stuff, coupons/deals/events with local business ( or whatever) to do with your dog ( like maybe a free agility class or use of agility facility...or tracking class...or whatever...would have to something of some value IMO)

I will say this...the whole idea seems like a logistical nightmare to me...but then I was not a fan of another of our ideas either and it has become one of the most successful things we do. ( so...mental note...apparently what I don't like much works out well.)

Yes, you take something, leave something and sign the log.

The best way to incorporate dogs is to take them with you.

I would consider trying to organize a geocache rally with the nearest geocache group and have the theme involve the dogs. I went to one and could not believe the amount of swag and prizes they had for kids.

    Re: geo-caching (BP in ME)

Another idea behind geocaches is to go to interesting or beautiful spots you wouldn't ordinarily find on your own. E.g. a secluded waterfall on private property (permission granted ahead of time). A lot of caches don't have this purpose but the degree of difficulty is quite often a good indicator.

My wife and kids took a class on geo-caching at in Pisgah Forest in North Carolina. They really enjoyed it up there. There is a website that has caches listed and the difficulty to find the cache. We did a few near some waterfalls etc. that made it worth the effort. I forget the site address but will check with my wife to see if she still has it.

We did a little bit of it last year with the kids. Was kinda fun, but we lost interest quickly. Other than your dog getting go for a walk I don't see how it would be involved.

We found caches that were emptied out coffee containers which had stuff in them, and also some that were very small (size of a chapstick) that just contained the log.

    +1
There are several sites around the Natchez trace. Some are in parks around Jackson for the "lunch timers" to find too.
Are you wanting to use dogs to find em ? I don't see any except trained dogs to do that and If you put treats in the box wild animals will tear it up.

Life is kinda hard but it's
better than the other options .. er ..option !

This is a great web-site to start with. My twin 7 year girls have started going this year and they absolutely love it. I think we've found 13 since February. It's just a high tech version of hide and seek. The cache's all range in size from a cool-whip container to the size of a 1oz bullet weight. The larger ones usually contain some type of trinket that can be traded for if you wish and log book to sign, and smaller ones just contain a log so bring a pen, and always return them just how and where you found them.

As mentioned before I think about the only way dog's could be incorporated would just the fact that you brought them along, and I haven't met a dog yet that doesn't like to go on a journey.

If nothing else go to the web-site type in your zip and do a search and when the list comes up there is a link that will say Map This Location click it and you will probably be amazed at how many are in your area.

Good idea...especially the first year. Let someone who knows how to do it run the thing and we just be a part of it.

exactly what we were thinking...( though I am not sure the steel mills count as beautiful LOL!)
My addition when this idea was brought up was to do something like little known historical places or that sort of thing...

...and the loss interest thing would be a problem.

I woke up this morning with the thought of more of a one day event...a blended event, like part Geo Caching, part Amazing Race, part poker run...
places to find, riddles to solve, challenges to complete etc.

This is the first Ive ever heard of this, sounds pretty cool, I just saw on TV where Tony Hawk is leaving things all over the world for people to find.

I found one on the project I'm working on. Be a lot easier to find now, i hung it from a tpost on the silt fence and you can see it from the road on the other side of the creek. When we're done they'll have a nice bridge and greenway trail to walk right to it. that way they ain't gotta walk across a creek and through the grass
