Adoption or rescue would be a great way to go. You can train them to do whatever you want.

I have a chocolate and a yellow lab. They both shed 13 months a year.![]()
A Bichon would be a great little dog. doesn't shed AT ALL, great house dogs and ours loves the water.
Other than that anything mixed with a poodle will be non shedding pretty much. Might a little bit not very much.
Get a labradoodle probably the smartest, and most loyal dog we have ever had. I have 2 daughters 13, and 10, and hes great with them. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. Check for a good breeder in your area.
Male Springer. Bit of maintenance with clipping but buy some clippers and do it yourself. Not difficult. Also ear problems when in water a lot.
Great personality and very sharp! Loves its family and will defend everyone in it. But also great with strangers. Just introduce him and hes fine.
One other believe it or not... Great Dane Theyre big babies and very kind.My daughter has one and we love her.Get a female. Fewer problems.
Go with the Boykin ! Smaller than a Golden or Lab, smart, loyal, awesome retreiver, great looking and they are unique, not everybody has one. Once you see one you will want one.
Thanks

Another vote for the beagle.
Earlier someone mentioned a Toller (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever). When I had a beagle, we would go for a walk every night with a Toller. Tollers aren't as big as a golden, easy to train, love the water and are really good with kids.

whatever short hair lab mix that is at the pound would be my choice. We've got a golden/lab mix, she is a great dog. Good amount of energy, but hasn't torn much up even though we don't get her enough exercise. Friendly. Had her at the pet store tonight, slipped from her collar. She of course came right back when I called her name.
Good riding around in the truck, don't take her out in the boat much, but she loves the water. Ours is black short hair and doesn't shed as bad.

I still can't believe they actually won...Cubs Fans Everywhere

Someone may have covered this already. Try taking a look at your local dog rescue. Some have a " rent a pet program". You can take the dog home for a few days. If things work out. Great. If not, try another. Most rescues spay/neuter and have their shots up to date.
We picked up our boxer/great Dane mix from a shelter. Got him as a pup and is great with the kids. Going on 4 years in April.
If you're looking for a specific breed. Most breeds have rescues as well.![]()
I have a question for the guys with the jack russels. How hard are they to house train?
The ones I've had were no harder than any other dog....males a little more hard headed naturally but nothing a trip to the vet didn't fix....one female that was kinda like a cocker when company came in she'd have accidents cause she got excited....

I'll second this![]()
we had a jack russell that we adopted and she only lasted here about 8 months.....she was 3 when we got her, very hard headed, set in her ways, and got nippy at times.....maybe if you got one as a pup??
Lab?....Golden...Border Collie?
You said does not shed right?
and small (ish)
Poodles like water ( not small but the standard poodles are good dogs)
Portuguese Water Dog
Barbet
American Water Spaniel ( minimal shedding)
Irish Terrier ( terrier energy levels)
Wheaten ( terrier energy levels)

or a Golden Retriever</td></tr></table>
Get both!
I picked Brewster up from a rescue, and I can't believe how lucky I am to have gotten him. He does shed a bunch, but I'm okay with running the vacuum cleaner. He isn't allowed on furniture, the only thing he chews is his chew bones, has the perfect temperament for kids, I can leave him roam of the house for 8 hours when I have to work during the week and not have to worry about him having an accident in the house, and has become my fishin' buddy.
Take the kids to a shelter and get a rescue dogs, the dog will love you forever.![]()
