    Cheaper rods in pros boats

I noticed some of the pros using rods like castaway and Veritos rods. Do they really like these rods or do they just use what the sponsors give them?

Some Castaway rods aren't cheaps but as far as some of the others, yea they are probably gave to them and it just proves that you dont need a 2 to $400 rod to consistantly catch big bags. In fact the rod your using has very little influence on your ability to catch fish like some people think.

Cool! I've only seen the cheap ones at Dick's sporting goods. Didn't know they made a more expensive one.

I think these rod companies have realized there is more of a market for the 100 to 150 dollar rods so they are pushing them harder

Ike used the Veritas rods a lot when they first came out. Not sure what he is using now, probably Villian. At least I assumed they were the Veritas as ever time I saw him he was using a white rod.

There is nothing wrong with 75-100 rods. I fish mostly custom rods but still have a place for a few $40 ugly stiks.

I know a guy who consistantly places in the top 10 on the co-angler side in the BFLs using Walmart specials with the plastic and bar code still on the handle.

Re: Cheaper rods in pros boats (Neilslure)

I agree with Neil. I've got several ultra high end rods, and I've got several that are other 100 range. Actually, they are the blue basalt rock fiber blanks from gander mountain. Absolutely incredible rods, at ANY price range.
They are always in my boat, no matter of the time of year, location, etc. I DO have a couple really tricked out zillions on them and that makes them even sweeter to me.
If you haven't tried one of these rods, do it soon.

I have an old Berkley Series 1 spinning rod that I bough out of a clearance bin at our Wal Mart for $25. I love the thing. Use it quite a bit even tho I also have some St. Croix Legend Elites. The fish don't care what kind of rod you are using.

I sure don't consider a Veritas, a cheap rod. I really think way too many people think a rod has to be over $200 for it to be any good. A lot of people think they have to have a special rod for use with almost any bait. That's just silly. I do have a couple of rods in the $200 price range. One I won in a raffle, one I got in a swap for a depth finder/gps. The majority of my rods were around $50 or less. They seem to work just fine...it's amazing.

Those old series one rods had a nice blank. I bought one from the clearance bin too. Now I wish I had bought them all.

Re: Cheaper rods in pros boats (billius)

I have old Shimano Speedmasters from the 80's that I still use on a daily basis, and they catch fish. Same thing with a pistol grip Lightning rod from the 80's, it catches fish.

Too many people get caught up in having to use a $300 reel or a $300 rod, or having a specific rod designed for every technique under the sun. To me, it just complicates things.

If you have the money to spend, by all means go ahead and stimulate the economy. But it's a fallacy, and a great disservice to people for the industry to give them the impression that they have to have an expensive rod, reel, lure, etc. I can use a 25 year old Shimano rod with a 25 year old Daiwa or Shimano reel, 15 lb Trilene Big Game, and a generic brand plastic worm or 20 year old Deep Wee R and catch as many fish as most other people that spend more than the GDP of an average sized third world country.

I have a few old Kunnan Flipping Sticks and I love them. Back years ago I am sure I didn't give much of anything for them, but I really like them at times. Catch fish with them to this day. I am sure some are much better than these, but I like them.

speaking of multiple rods for all different techniques....I remember many many years ago Rick Clunn saying he liked to keep the majority of his rods and reels the same with the reason being he could pick anyone of them up with different baits and they all felt and cast the same way, no need in changing how a rod or reel is handled with each bait change. I have always followed that principle too with the only exception being a flipping stick.

The veritas is not a cheap rod as far as sensitivity, and weight its a great rod. Saying that a lot of 100 dollar rods re good rods. EXCEPT the skeet reese rods and reels i do not see how they fish with those.

Those new LR shock are great rods, very good rod, heck 25 years ago those would be state of the art. None the less, bought one for my FIL 2 yr. ago, remember thinking what a great rod.
