Mercury to start using ETEC with Mercury Label

This is a hot one just off the ETEC factory floor. I guy I know that works at the ETEC plant says they are painting ETEC’s black and putting Mercury stickers on them. They will be replacing the Merc lineup in 2007. He says Merc knows they can’t compete with the ETEC. Can any one verify this one? How about you dealers? Has Mercury thrown in the towel and conceded to the superiority of ETEC?

Re: Mercury to start using ETEC with Mercury Label (John from IL)

The story I heard was they aren't going to repaint the E-tech they are just going to start selling the power heads to Merc due to the lack of sales with the verado. SO pretty much it will look like a verado but have an E-tech power head. Think they are going to call it a V-tech!?

This way the "black on the back" guys won't get pissed and still be running a "Merc"!

Well you know, Yamaha used to make Mercury's 4 strokes for them, so why not pass the dollar around to BRP!!!!!

To add more fuel to the fire, I read that Mercury is moving its manufacturing to China for all engines over 25hp, and the small motors are made by Tohatsu(?)

To add EVEN MORE fuel to the fire.... I read a hilarious comment on another site that was having a Merc/BRP war...

Re: Mercury to start using ETEC with Mercury Label (cgfishn)

Wow! there sure is alot of anxiety from "rude" owners about Mercury products. I was curious, are the feelings your "sharing", the same feelings felt when FICHT units were leaving owners stranded on water/ramps (Don't know if this was the catalyst for companies financial collaspe or not)? The bowling pin company kept thier products pushing glass at a much cheaper cost per unit ratio than Evinrude during this time frame. And speaking of speed, can some tell me about Evinrude's high performance line? Haven't heard of one. If there isn't one, maybe a few posts such as this one will push Evinrude's "new owners" to establish a racing division of their own?

Re: Mercury to start using ETEC with Mercury Label (claude)

It is fun, I really believe Evinrude makes and always has made the most reliable carburated outboards on the market. I own a mercury now and really have no product loyalty to speak of. Could very well buy a boat next year with an Evinrude pushing it. I believe all of them are being built better as well as I believe they all also have their fair amount of baggage too. I am very compassionate about our American made products. I am a GM service technician and have mixed emotions about the financial struggles GM and Ford are currently facing. Don't like the thought of foriegn companies buying up major names that we all grew up with, its unsettling for me. I never thought the "big three" auto manufacturers would be where they are today. Brand bashing is fun and I believe its whats stirring all the latest innovations in the marine industry today (Competitve American nature/spirit). It's a good thing, Happy Holidays to all and thanks for leaving the door open.
