    Burn Barrel

Got a 55 gal drum and looking to burn some stuff as the wife is always complaining about her fire pit. Something about the kids not being able to roast marshmallos after i put shingles in the pit.

I was thinking about putting a few holes down low and maybe a few in the middle for air. Does it need to be on blocks with holes in the bottom?

The holes low help combustion while holes in the bottom drain the rain when you forget to dump it over after use. Placing it on a couple of blocks saves the turf beneath.

I'd cut 4 holes about 3" square or round along the bottom rim across from each other and put the drum up on three 8" cinder blocks.

Definately put it on blocks, it will last longer. I use a 1/2" drill bit and put holes about 6" apart on the bottom and 2/3 up the sides.

In addition to all the stuff others have mentioned, I add an old BBQ grate inside the barrel. A couple pieces of rebar poked thru the barrel will support the grate.

Fire pit for roasting marshmallows, grilling a steak, hamburger, hot dogs, best thing we have found is a washing machine drum. After the parks dept and DNR saw people bring their own in to camp grounds and set them on blocks or stones, the parks use them now. They weld a post on them and concrete them into camp sites. For home use, a large SS Weber grate (the one that fits the round Weber's) work great over the tub. Plenty of air flow and drain holes.

Doing this lets air under the trash, so it all burns better

To each his own, but I don't think I'd post on a forum that I'm burning shingles. Even Indiana has laws against that. If their fines are similar to ours here, I wouldn't be admitting that. I could really care less what he does on his own property.

    Re: Burn Barrel (rayz_379)

Thanks for the ideas fellers. Got sidetracked on another project so i will set up the burn barrel next weekend. Scrapping a few old riding mowers and i'll be darned if it didn't take me 3 hrs to get one of the motors out of one of them

And before some of you get your panties in a wad, i do not burn tires and motor oil. Tires go to the gravel pit outside town for structure and motor oil goes across the road in the field where it can seep back to where it came from.

    Re: Burn Barrel (Bronzebackfive)

I used a punch and a hammer. 1 in the bottom for a drain and then 3 or 4 around the middle for air. Set it on bricks.
