There are plenty of them available already, but at 10-20 bucks a piece and can be found at the big box's. The light is great, plus they will last for years and then some. My BIL put them in can lights during his remodel, when i redo the kitchen/bar area this year I'll be installing them as well. Just bring the price down a bit.![]()
ya them new bulbs sure are great. I used to love going to the garage ten minutes early to fire them up before a project and then d&mn near work in the dark to save a few pennies
They pretty much suck not to mention the one's with mercury if you break one and follow the EPA's guidelines it will take like 6 hrs to clean up.
Should read government buys ad time with tax dollars. Phillips will turn around and put it back into PACs.

I hear ya but I made the switch to CFL's in the garage and you're right, there is a warm up time with them. My garage is heated so even in the dead of winter, it takes 30-45 seconds for them to be at full brightness.
But, I used to have (8) 200W incandescent bulbs = 1600W total that were bright. I replaced them with (8) 150W CFL's that draw 42W each = 336W total. I'm not going to tell you the CFL's are as bright, but they're probably 95% of what the incandescents were and use 79% less energy. For guys like me that forget and leave the lights on all night, its a decent savings![]()

What insane here is we already have the new bulbs the government says we have to go too that were the answer according to the feds 10 years ago and now Phillips put's a bunch of LEDs together and gets 10 Million for a new idea (Not) and this was an award for developing an affordable bulb![]()

LED bulbs have been around for years....and they do not cost $50. They are more expensive, but for some of my commercial customers they are a better value...especially in places where the bulbs are difficult to get to.
I just put an LED flood bulb in a residential customers hard to get to eave mounted flood light...it was $27.
Regular bulbs have a stated life span of 10,000 hours ( which is usually over stated) and cost $8...the LED have a life span of an average of 35,000 hours ( some are as low as 25,000 - some as high as 50,000 depending on who built them) - 8x3.5 =28...
so I would say their value is right on par. Include the decreased electrical load etc and the LED are a good value.
not so sure about use in lamps etc...they are still a bit pricey for that IMO.

Is not what Phillips did is made a LED light bulb that can be built ( and thus sold) for less $$$?

Thats kind of the point, the government awards them 10 million for developing nothing new.

just went out and found a different article on this bulb...holey crap is it different than the one that came in my email. TOTALLY different take on it.
So now I am unsure what Phillips has actually done...
...the article that came in my email made it sound like they had made big improvements to the LED that will eventually drive the price lower...good thing.
...the article on Yahoo makes it sound like they essentially took the LED bulb and made it more expensive....bad thing.
talk about two totally different takes on the same issue.
Either way the government shouldn't be paying.

+1
No one has brought up the ties between South Korea LG & Phillips. Didn't we recently pass some kind of trade agreement with South Korea? If the public wanted a 50.00 light bulb we would have demanded one.

+2 if it is a great idea it shouldn't need GOV help.

Don't know about you guys but my utility bill has went up about 40% over the last 3-4 years. So you pay 5-10 x for a light bulb that uses less energy while your bill doubles during the same time frame. 79% less energy my azz
