    2001 Evinrude 250

Saw a boat I like with a 2001 Evinrude 250, 350 hours. I know basically what the issues are: does it have all the computer updates and the lower unit. Read that if the you were going to have lower unit trouble, it would have happened in the first 50-100 hours.

Question: if it's the original lower unit (meaning it wasn't replaced with the new version) should I worry about that? Or would it be a case of if it didn't blow, it's not going to?

Also any other issues to know of?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rich

The best thing to do here is to have the engine checked out by a tech. Usually a lower unit will crater sooner than later, but it is all relative. Engine load, rpm, overall usage makes a difference. A model and serial # will help. Oh yeah, welcome to the BBC!!!

Thanks rudetech1. Just trying to arm myself with as much info as possible. Don't even knwo if the boat is still for sale but if it is I'm going for it. And I understand the need to have it checked out by a qualified tech. Based in the condition of the boat (as I see it) I would say it's gonna be ok.

    Thanks for the reply

Never take anything for granted in the boating community! Looks can be deceiving, this is usually found out when one gets married!

    Three claims filed under warranty....

One kit, one EMM, and a volt meter.

Thank you very much for the head start. Will of course get it checked out by a qualified mechanic.

Do I remember that you should a special oil in these engines? Something like XD-50 or XD-100? What if he ran just TW3C?

    Thanks

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by omoo &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">BTW, what is a "kit" ?</TD></TR></TABLE> The kit is for the injectors, it was used to help retain them in place. Keeps them from loosening on the cylinder head. Not a big worry.

    Re: 2001 Evinrude 250 (omoo)

I guess my basic question is this. He's has not problems in 370 hours of use. Should he have run Xd-50 (or XD-100, what's the diff?) intead of TW3C? Did he do any harm running TW3C that a good seafoam treatment wouldn't cure?

    Thanks

The difference between xd-50 and xd100 is the 50 is a semi synthetic blend the 100 is full syn. My 03 is running the 100. I find the benefits are worth the extra cost of the oil. Your 01 would be good with the 50 except for colder weather(may set off false no oil alarms) You would need to decarb once a year or every 75-100 hours. I buy my xd-100 from my dealer in bulk, bring my own jug for 30.00 a gallon.Hope this helps.
