    Bogging Down!

Hey Folks, Lookin for a little help. The last time that I took my boat out at Smith Mountain Lake my '94 Johnson 175 Fast Strike started to act up. At take-off I would throttle up and the motor would bog down dramatically and would stay that way. It would not take off or let the boat plane out. I don't know what the world would be causing it to happen. If I stopped the boat and tried to take off again, sometimes it would go right and sometimes it would just bog down again.

Any help would be appreciated as I am starting to get fed up with the thing. One thing after another. lol

We will need more info to answer your question, what RPM does it bog down to, does it bog slowly or just drop to this RPM?

I know a guy that had almost identical problems. He's problem was with E10 fuel because he had let it sit for 3 weeks. The E10 had cleaned his tank and all the gunk was going into his motor and caused the bogging.

What he did to check if it was an E10 issues was to run his motor on a portable tank. When he found it ran good, he knew it had to be either the E10 or a fuel restriction.

He cleaned the screen on his fuel tank, then added a Startron and now the motor runs fine.

BTW, being that he has a Recor filter, he filled up his Racor with Startron when he hooked up to the portable behind the Recor. I think the idea behind the Startron in the Racor is that Startron emulsifies the gunk from old gas so it helps to clean out any of the gunk that might have been in the motor.

    Good luck!

    rusty

it doesnt happen all the time. mostly when it occurs in my situation is after i have the motor warming up while i park the truck. The mechanic said that the 2-strokes dont like to idle too much and would cause plugs to foul. I checked the plugs and they were not fouled or anything.

mine also bogs fro mthe start, turn the motor over and the pitch of the idle will be different. and wont plane at WOT. then all of a sudden it will fix itself. I have new coils that should be here today, dont know if that will solve or fix the problem.

sounds like the carbs are clogged. Same thing happened to mine - coincidentally, the first time after I used an ethanol fuel.

an easy way to test the carbs would be to remove the air breather cover, get a spray bottle of 50:1 mixed gas, start idleing on a hose, spray into each carb and listen for a boost in speed. If it cuts out or has no change, its getting gas in that cylinder. I've also taken it one step farther and removed all but 1 plug wire, started up the motor, and with heavily insulated pliars, put one plug boot on at a time to check for each cylinder to properly be firing and running.

Hey guys. you all really helped out alot. I had no idea where to begin checking for the problem. Someone asked what the RPM's were but I'm afraid that I don't know. I have already winterized my boat and am no where near water to find out. One thing that was said that makes a whole lot of sense is the when it idles a lot. I think that most of the time it does it is after i get through cruizing through a "no wake" zone or after I warm the motor up. I think I will go ahead and change the plugs and see what happens in the spring. Appreciate the help men and if there is anything else you might think of, please let me know.
