Any of you guys ever been to Indiana Dunes?

My wife and I are thinking about going up there next weekend and we've never been there. I know there are the beach and the sand dunes but what else are there to do? Is the water warm enough for swimming? Any fishing pier close to the park? Thnx.

I've been there several times, but its been long, long ago. Prowling around the dunes is about all there is to do in the immediate area. To my knowledge, there is no fishing pier anywhere near there. You could drive east to Michigan City. There is an area where the public can fish along the sea wall at Washington Park Marina, where Trail Creek dumps into Lake Michigan. Lots of folks fish there for salmon. Not sure its a great time of year to do that right now though. There are fish there to be caught, just probably not big numbers this time of year. The Kings (Chinook) will be coming into the creek from mid August until maybe late September.

We took our horse's up there yesterday trail riding. We wasn't near the lake though but it was a great place to take the horse's. Like Bill said just the beach and the dunes plus some hiking trails. Bass Pro isn't to far away in Portage. The Blue Chip casino in Michigan City and the Four Winds casino in New Buffalo Mi. I think they said the lake temp was in the low 70's.

Water is probably a little too chilly for most people as far as swimming goes. I was at Portage last weekend and the water temp was 64 degrees on the main lake and 67 degrees in the Marina's.

Used to go regularly and camp. We could hang out at the beach or get into Chicago for the city stuff. On weekends they started bussing in a lot of unsupervised kids, which ruined the beach for us.
