    Shad Raps and baitcasters

Well i the pleasure expierence of throwing (more like trying) a shad rap on a baitaster. Sure wasnt fun with 15 mph winds. At the advice of the boater I tied one on my spinning reel. Still didnt catch anything but it was easier.

Same thing on a small husky jerk, backlack USA throwing that thing. I could throw anything else just perfect.

Anyone throw shad raps on spinning gear. I dont know if it was the weight of the lure, the aerodynamics of it, but i thought i was loseing my mind.

i throw shad raps alot. i find it alot easier to throw on baitcasters. you just have to have the right rod and reel and line setup.

Depends on the size. I throw a 5 quite a bit, always on spinning gear.

I can throw a 7 for the most part on a baitcaster, but it's tough on windy days, especially if you find yourself throwing against it.

A 9 on a baitcaster all day long, windy or not.

I keep all three sizes on hand for the conditions.

make sure you throw with as limber rod as you can get away with because you want to load the tip up since the shad raps are so lite!

If you are throwing into the wind with a Shad Rap #5 or #7 with bait casting you will have big trouble. Throwing with the wind no problem. The same said for spinning. Backlash won't be the problem with spinning as much throwing in the wind but your distance will be short. I throw small raps on 6' spinning out fits with 6lb. On my casting outfits I use a Core 50 with 8# test and a loomis CBR 783.

I throw a 5 on spinning or baitcasting, just depends. I only really got 1 good casting rod that'll throw it well so i'll put the shallow on one of em and the deep on the other. I use an upgraded Citica D100 baitcaster with it and 6-8# fluoro. If the wind gets up too bad i just use the spinning.

Re: Shad Raps and baitcasters (Fiddlefarter)

I started throwing them and other light cranks last year with a custom made spiral wrapped micro guide baitcasting rod. The first time out was on a windy day and I had no problems. I had it paired with an older model Garcia 5000 that hadnt been oiled in a bunch of years I had some old 12 lb mono on the reel. I had the bearings and gears screaming on the old Abu.

Plenty of guys around here use spinning gear for those light weight cranks like #5 Shad Raps. Like mentioned above, the right rod/reel will help.

Is the "right" rod some kind of secret? That's the second reply that said to use baitcasters, but then dont list the rod or reel they use. Come on guys spill the beans.

shad x rap is the bomb. Much easier throwing downwind though.

Re: Shad Raps and baitcasters (UkCatsBasser)

I usually thrown them on my spinning rods, because they tend to sail and I don't like the frustration of fishing them on a baitcaster. Have a 7' triumph rod that throws the #5's a long way. Cheap, but quality rod. The #7's I throw on a little heavier rod.

Bait casters are fine, and prefer them for almost every crankbait, but not for shad raps or storm thinfins.

I admire you guys that can sling a #5 on a BC. I will stick to spinning rods when rapping. I use a light 6' Fenwick for 5's and a 7' medium for 7's.

Re: Shad Raps and baitcasters (UkCatsBasser)

I throw the shad rap on a baitcaste, tried it on a spinner but didn't like the feel. The trick to casting it is to adjust the cast control knob so when releasing the spool the lure doesn't move. I can throw it in the wind without backlashing.
