    Here puppy.............Stupid tourist

Now I lived in Alaska for seven years and saw many bear and moose. Got pretty close to some of them mainly because they were in my yard or checking out my garage. However when you go into their domain you don't get this close unless you want to be lunch.

    Re: Here puppy.............Stupid tourist (Sigma)

Links gone, but I can only imagine what happened.

When I lived in Jasper Alberta I saw a lot of stupid tourist crap. One day when I was out for a drive I noticed a bunch of cars pulled over for a bear. I then noticed a guy pouring honey on his kids hand to have the bear come lick it. This time I had pulled over and got my camera out and pointed it at the kid in a very obvious manner (before any real harm could be done).

The dad freaked on me for being a perv and taking pictures of his kid. I then politely reminded him that bears are wild dangerous animals. It would not lick his kids hand, it would kill his kid and eat him. I was just getting ready to take pictures for the news. After him yelling at me a bit more, he realized I was right after the bear had bluff charged another car. Within seconds everyone had left the area and all was good again. When people see an animal in a National Park they think it is tame and friendly

"This was not supposed to happen. Our guide said he saw this as a bluff charge, trying to scare us, which he did! We were all in shock but were happy that no-one in our group jumped up, ran away or screamed for their lives."

They left out the part about having to get the Alaskan HazMat Team to come out
and clean up the area of deadly fecal matter left by several of the tourist ....

you know, TOURIST, should not do that. But if you know what you're doing around those bears it's not that big of a deal. When I spent my time in AK, I was bluffed charged multipl times. I never really worried about the bears. Of course I was always carring a 12ga. with slugs but only had to point it a few times, and of those never got my finger on the trigger. Bad idea from that group, but that was a young boar that "more than likely" just bluffed charged because he didn't know what was going on. Its fairly common....Josh

Professionals say that if you are hiking in grizzly bear country, wear bells and carry pepper spray. They also teach you how to identify bear scat. Grizzly bear scat has bells in it and smells like pepper.

I have a book written by a guy who was one of the most respected Grizzly Biologists in Alaska. It is called "No Room for Bears" by Dufrense "sp" He was very fond of the Bears and respected them completly. It was also his opinion that 1 in 20 would charge unprovoked! How any person guiding Tourists let them get that close to them and then allow one to charge to within inches is beyond belief. If he keeps that behavior up somebody will get killed. It will end up like the stupid Hippie a few years ago that got himself killed and eaten!

The thing about Grizzly bears is that even if you are carrying a fairly large caliber rifle, you are still not on top of the food chain, and even if you kill the bear, it can still kill you postmortem.

In the time I was living up there, all the folks there talked about rather having bears than snakes and gators.

I'll keep the snakes and gators, thank you.

Don't think I can handle that. I hate snakes, but realize that I have a 99% + chance of living if bitten. Have to assume I have a 99% chance of not living if attacked by a grizzly. I play the odds. In the video, I would've had to either shoot or you know the saying, "I don't have to be faster than the bear, just not the slowest in the group"
