    Is this too much $$

Looked at and plan on taking on the water tomorrow.

    1996 Ranger 462VS
    Mercury 150 XR6 (2003 year)
    Hyd steering
    New Carpet and Seats
Brand new MK 70 lb trolling motor
    Keel guard
Hull appears to be in great condition (normal scuffs for 96)
Gel coat looks great shines like a new boat.
No electronics installed (said he'd install bow and helm but not GPS) we'll see!
Had it listed for 9K after haggling a bit said he needed to get at least $8200.
Will take it out in the morning and check all pumps livewells, guages etc... said he'd make sure everything worked before I took posession.
If anyone has any insight on this model that I need to check I'd appreciate it. It's at a dealer/marina. Thanks in advance for the opinions.

If everything is in reconditioned shape as mentioned but needs some electronics. If he puts some quality electronics on it then it'd be worth it. If not then offer him $7600 cash and walk away. Negotiate it up to 7800 but no more without basic electronics.

I Googled up some Ranger 461's for sale, FYI. I wouldn't mind having one.

Walkabout............ It's a 462 VS Dual Console looks nothing like the one in the first link and the one in you're second link has a blown motor so the $3100 does not seem comparable but thanks for the posting.

three year newer boat with a four year older motor hmmm. Reading the responses seems ballpark maybe with room to negotiate The electronics may make or break the deal.

Re: Is this too much $$ (ajwasco)

I say he should at least put LCX's or similar for the electronics. What trailer, dual or single axle? That is a great Ranger model but you should be able to get it less than what he's asking. That motor is bullet proof!!

Re: Is this too much $$ (Jigsisme)

Thanks all for the replies. So if his best deal is 8k what dollar amount is realistic these days to haggle for electronics. I can't see him adding 2k worth of electronics or dropping the price to 6K. Been looking patiently and don't have to have a boat this weekend. Just sold one yesterday. I'm also the proud backseater on my parnters 2010 Z21. Just like having one to fish with my ten year old.
Just ran the NADA numbers again Low Retail is $6960 Average Retail is $7895

Good deal and one of my favorite Rangers. The route I would take is I would tell him to save his money on electronics and knock another 500 off his 8200 and buy it.

Assuming the engine checks out. Good luck!

Re: Is this too much $$ (ajwasco)

I owned a 461 (single console) for several years and in my opinon is the best hull that Ranger ever produced. I really wanted a 462 (dual console) but just couldn't find one. I think that it's priced pretty close to what it's worth especially since it has the newer motor on it.

I have a 97' 461vs. Bought it new. Excellent boat. As long as it's in the shape you say and you like it after the ride, it's worth it. How's the trailer?

That boat is 16 years old plus no electronics??? Run, run away from that. I don't care if it is a Ranger.

Re: Is this too much $$ (ajwasco)

Sounds like a good buy. I have a 97' 461 with a mariner 175 efi. Great riding boat. Fishes big for an 18-19ft class boat. Handles rough water well. Handles wind well while you are fishing. You can pick up some good electronics for under a $1000.

If the boat is in as good as shape as you are stating it will last you forever. You and your son will have years of enjoyment out of it.

Re: Is this too much $$ (ajwasco)

On craiglist, Guntersville boat mart has this boat listed as a 482vs. The boat looks good from the pictures. I would say take it for a ride and see how you like it. That 2.5l xr6 is bullet proof.

oh and by the way any waves over 2 feet you better get a back brace......rangers are over rated big time......its just a name......spend your money on a different boat
