    No Break-in?

I take delivery of my new boat (Ranger Reata 190) with a 2007 200HO ETec next week and am wondering if I should really not worry about a break-in period? I am a little nervious about running it WOT right away. Any thoughts on this?

Also, I'm having it set for XD100 before I take delivery. Is this a good idea?

I think there is a break-in period where it burns extra oil. How long does this last?

    Thanks,
    Wayne

    Re: No Break-in? (gravitylow)

My break-in lasted for about 10 minutes - idling out into the lake, and the 1st pass down a 5 mile lake. Second pass I ran about 3/4 throttle. 3rd pass WOT. I couldn't contain myself any longer. Motor has never missed a beat since I got it.

I think the break-in period is now set at 10 hrs. When I had a couple of things checked, they pulled the hours off the motor and at around 12 hours, the motor was done with break-in. I probably used about 1 gal of xd100 during that first 10 hrs.

Definitely go for the xd100 - especially if you are going to run in cooler temps. My manual states that the motors are now coming from the factory programmed for xd100.

    Re: No Break-in? (gravitylow)

The break in is x numbers hours above a certain rpm. My 225HO was out of break in with 10hrs and 13 minutes on the clock. I had mine programmed for XD100 from theg et go. Also, I took it easy on mine for the first few trips....Stayed at 4000 rpm or so, a few times to WOT, then after 3-4 trips, I opened her up and ran the piss out of her. She's a hapy motor and runs great, getting close to 50hrs on it now.

    Re: No Break-in? (gravitylow)

On my new ETEC 90 I elected to run XD100 at the XD50 setting. I also followed the break-in procedures of my 2000 115 Ficth. The prop I selected was a low pitch to allow the motor to reach the upper end of the RPM. The dealer set it up with one that was 2 inches more pitch than what I used for break in. I find it hard to believe that a motor can be run hard from day one. After about a year I took it to the dealer and had it reprogrammed to XD100.

If you need the 10 hour break in procedure for non-ETEC motors let me know.

    Re: No Break-in? (gravitylow)

I kept my 225 HO at less than 4,000 for about 1 hour, then varied RPM but never ran WOT for another hour. Then ran it like normal.
The EMM is set to double oil for 10 hours above 2,500 RPM, then switch to normal oiling.
    Strongly advise only XD100.

Evinrude E-Tec has no Break-in, it can be programmed to run XD-100 from the start, up to this point all are shipped to run TCWIII oil.

The EMM (computer) will deliver extra oil above 2000 RPM's for approximately 2 hours.

My choice on every E-Tec I have taken for the maiden voyage......Run It Like You Stole It, never have had a problem.

    Re: No Break-in? (RUSTY63)

I used Rusty63's breakin plan. I started the motor backed off the trailer let idle for 25-30 seconds then dropped the hammer I think I bent the hotfoot just making sure it was wide open. My motor has performed very well for me I now have just under 200 hours on it. I have had all the updates done that I know of.

Lots of Evinrude ETec bashing going on - on other boards. Saying they all have to go back for warrenty work, etc. Wondering if Merc pays people to bash or if merc dealers are doing it?

You are right. There are people that work for Merc on these boards. Whether Merc incourages them to post negatively or not, I don't know.

I've had two 225 H.O. E-TEC's. An '05 on a 200 Pro Stratos and a '06 on a 202 Blazer. Both boat's maiden voyage (I mean first time hitting the throttle after backing into the water) broke 80 mph on my gps's. I had a 30 Raker on the Stratos which ended up not being the best overall prop (terrible holeshot), but it did get me over 80. With both boats, I fish tournaments before I had two total hours on the motors.

Basically, like Rusty said, you don't need to do anything to the motors. The computer will add double oil as long as it needs to. You run it how you want.

    Re: No Break-in? (1niceBlazer)

When I got my 05 Etec, I idled out of a no wake, which took about 30 seconds or so, then I mashed the pedal to the floor. I have drove it that way ever since and have yet to experience a problem.
