Did my discovery flight today....sorry it's a little long.

I have decided to try and get my private pilot license. The great thing is my Vocational Rehabilitation through the VA will pay for it. So I took my first step today. The first thing you do is called your discovery flight. They showed me how the online courses will be and showed me the flight simulater. Then we went out and did a walk around on on the three aircraft that you can train in. We then went to the plane that we would be flying which was a EveKtor sport star. We climbed in and started doing the pre flight check list. After going over some basic instructions we proceeded to taxi to the runway. The instructor let me taxi all the way there. Then we took off. I will tell you that the wind was blowing like crazy today which made it very fun As we started our ascent. As we got above 4,500ft it was very calm. After about 10 minutes of flying the instructor let me take the wheel (not really a steering wheel, more of a long joy stick/yoke). Man I was nervous and had a death grip on the yoke. But once I got the hang of it, it was the most amazing feeling. I was working the throttle, pitching the plane and still trying to find my house as we flew over my town. I can't tell you how fun it was. I spent the rest of the day looking up at the sky wanting to go back up. I think I might enjoy this......LOl

thats awesome, i would love to get my pilot liscense one day. My neighbor has an airplane, and one of my old highschool teachers does as well. I enjoy flying in big commercial planes, but nothing beats the small planes being able to manuever them around almost like your on a street. Also went up in a helicopter a few months ago and love that as well.

Just for the record ..... helicopters CAN'T FLY.

They just beat the air into submission.

ADAM, congrats. I've had my Private Pilot license since 1972. It's a wonderful hobby. The biggest concern is the cost nowdays. Back then, you could rent a 172 Cessna for $20 an hour.

whats a private license cost these days? I'v flown r/c planes since the late 1980's & about 10yrs ago had a friend that got his private licence, i flew with him several times and we were both amazed how much flying r/c planes transferred directly to flying a real one (cessna 152 in our case), infact it was easier cause your in the plane and could tell what it was doing. congratulations on your new endeavor!!!

You're ruined for life. My dad was a private pilot for years so I grew up in and around airplanes. At the age of 13 I was able to fly his 177 Cardinal RG from the right seat completely on my own from start to finish. Boy the fun we had! His last airplane he flew was an A36 Bonanza. What an airplane! For a single engine I compared it to pulling up at the store in a Ferrari when we would pull up on the ramp wherever we went. My uncle owned a Citabria which was always fun to go flying in also. His company also had a King Air 200, a Baron, and a Piper Lance. I consider myself fortunate for having been able to grow up in airplanes and bass boats. I also wanted to fly of coarse but a devastating eye injury in the 7th grade ruined my dreams of being a military pilot. Live it up man! Aint nothing like flying in my book!
