    Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe...

...has a thing or two to say about the current state of affairs as it applies to work. Pay attention to when he speaks about a huge project that almost tanked because there were not enough qualified welders to perform the work. I remember the story because someone here posted about China getting a big chunk of that project. In that case it wasn't us being sold out, we just didn't have the skilled people to do the work

well said .. a commenter on the video said if you mention to some parents about their child becoming a mechanic or rail engineer you'd get a look of horror. I think everyone focuses on being a doctor or astronaut and think any "working" job is beneath them.

My dad has been saying this for several years now. He is a machinist/tool and dye maker and that industry has been hurting for skilled employees for a long time. He blames the schools for not promoting the skills trades and encouraging everyone to get some sort of degree having to do with computers. I can see both sides.

Schools have been trying to push the academic underachievers and troublemakers into the trades for decades now. The trade school I went to was more like a reform school, I wouldn't let half of those idiots put air in my tires.

cant speak for welding, but I took carpentry for 2 years in vocational school, didn't make me a master carpenter but was entry level, anyway went into the job field on commercial side, always worked for just a paycheck, no benefits, no vacation time, meanwhile guys who wen into nursing working for Hospitals with benefits, good pay, steady paychecks, etc. Now I can see why nobody wants to go into the industrial trades, no job stability, poor benefits, no retirement. I will always steer any kid in the direction to go to college, be a school teacher, nurse, computers, just a better all around way to earn a living.

My tournament partner is a VP at a major gear manufacturer. He says that they repeatedly have difficulty finding young, skilled workers and they pay very well. He says that too many kids are being pushed into college that should not be. Being a college prof, I can attest that there are a number of kids in my classes that should not be in college.

Good find. This video couldn't be more true. I know some contract welders that are bumping 200k and we can't hire enough to do all of the work.

Re: Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe... (The Old Man)

well i got my machinist degree in 2008 (im 25 years old now) and i could not find a job for nothing you had to have the experience or they woulndt even talk to you they wanted you to work for nothing and learn more and get expericence then you may get a job. i was 15000 in debt and no job. i found one job but it didnt pay enough and was 65 miles away. its been three years and i finally found a machine operator job. still not really programming and machining but its a job. so i cant really justify telling anyone to go into the trade unless you know someone that can get you a job.

I agree with that as well. Very few companies are willing to do training anymore.

Re: Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe... (The Old Man)

Our local school closed the shop program, and then did away with the home ec classes. We are now graduating kids, some with kids, that don't even know how to balance a check book. The local college IA program is defunct and the building and equipment sits empty and idle.

Maybe there should be a serious look at funding technical type classes in public schools. Maybe there should be a serious discussion about having welfare recipients taking technical trade classes. And maybe the requirement to look for work to recieve unemployment should be reinstated.

It may be as much as we are not encouraging the youth to become skilled laborers as the youth have become or becoming expectant to getting white collar jobs starting out with 6 figures and a car.

Maybe there should be someone in the schools telling the students that there is good money to be made in the trades. I have a plumber that makes 80K and have seen some making 100K in service. Its not easy and that is one of the problems also.

I dunno. Like it was said we have a huge unemployment and a labor shortage at the same time. It aint right.

The nail on the head for sure.
The other comment about companies wanting people ready to go is so true as well. They need to go back and think when they started out with new on the job.

Neat to see him take his position in TV and use it in a positive way.

Re: Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe... (CiK)

some of you are taking the wrong approach... to push welfare recipients into a trade, doesn't mean your going to get skilled labor from that. Probably just another know-nothing looking for a check...

I agree that college isn't for everybody (like me), and the kids that grow up tinkering with stuff, tearing apart to see how it works, etc. should be encouraged to look into a trade... problem is, you get five good ones that want to learn, the school sees no profit in just the five and don't form a program, or fill the class with a bunch of safety hazards that get in the way of the ones that want to get a skill.

been there, done that... even back in the day... and now it's worse...
