Yamaha prop question?

I have a 150 and I decided to pull my prop to check for fishing line. Well it has never been pulled and after I pulled the pin I found the nut to be handy. Everything came off fine and looked great. My question is shouldn't it be torqued? Is that normal? I put it back on and if I try to tighten it I can't get the pin in. I don't won't to over tighten so I put it back like it was. Any advice?

Might post on the Yamaha Motor forum.. For my Mercury I think the torque spec on the prop nut is 55 foot pounds of torque. FWIW.

You mean you were able to take the nut off without using a wrench? Waaaaay too loose, if that's the case. I don't know exactly how tight it should be, but I think it's around 55 ft/lbs? (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Are you saying if you tighten the nut down it goes post the hole in the prop shaft for the pin??

If so you may be missing a washer somewhere, just a guess.

My 115 was 40 ft lb and if it does not line up tighten it untill it meets the hole. If you loosen it slightly then it's no longer called torqued

It has not been touched since I bought it brand new. I am not missing any washers. After reinstalling there is no play when I pull on the prop, but it isn't tight by no means. Yes if I start to tighten down on it I will have to really get on it to get it to where I can reinstall the pin. I tried to tighten it but was worried I might cause damage.

What are you using to tighten it? I wouldn't think you'd get it too tight.

Ratchet , but not a torque wrench. I Guess I need to run get one just to see what it is getting to before I cause any damage.

If your thrust washer moved forward on the shaft, that could be the cause of the loose nut. The 1 piece thrust washers were known for wallering out allowing the prop to hit the gearcase.

Might try Autozone or some place along those lines....sometimes they will loan you specialty tools like a torque wrench. I not you can pick one up pretty cheap at NAPA

Remove the nut from the prop shaft, lightly coat the threads on the prop shaft with marine grease and thread the nut back on to make contact with the prop washer. Look where the cotter pin will go through the castle nut, put a piece of wood between the cavitation plate and the prop blade. Cinch down on that wrench until it snugs up and check if the cotter pin will go in. It should go in within a 1/4 turn from the time it felt wrench snug. To help you line up the hole one the prop shaft make a mark on the end of the prop shaft with a black magic marker.

You are supposed to check and re tighten prop nuts when you check for line etc on prop shaft/seal per regular maintainence. Thrust washer wear can/will cause a loose nut as well as hub compression.
