buy the bird bro you wont go wrong, ranger is a good boat but you pay for the name alot. you wont find one bad review on the phoenix and you get a 19ft boat with a 225, so you get speed,ride and fishability. its laid out for fishing better than any other boat. im picking up my 719 next week and i done alot of shoping and comparing before i decided on the 719. NOTHING ELSE COMPARES. dont get me wrong those other boats are good boats but the phoenix is just better imo

First off, this is not true. . .but moving forward. Full disclosure: I own a Ranger. I have used a friend's Phoenix. Here is my assessment of the two brands. They both make awesome bass boats. The Phoenix rides better and handles turns better. It is a real performer on the big motor. The Ranger is a better fishing boat though. When you a trolling motor, there is a big difference. Polish and trim goes to Ranger, but the Phoenix is close. The front deck on the Phoenix is smaller than the Ranger. I like the switch panel on the Phoenix better but I like the cockpit layout of the Ranger better. Compartment wise, they are both nice. I am fine with the layout of either. The bottom line, if you are a runner and gunner, you are going to be happier with a Phoenix. If you spend more time on the trolling motor than the big motor, you will be happier with a Ranger. Longevity wise, I would be concerned about the long term integrity of a "composite" transom that is simply foam sandwiched between fiberglass. Remember when Aaron Martins didn't make it to weigh in because his motor and jack plate sheared off his Phoenix boat after hitting a wave? I'm from the north. I have fished Ontario, Erie, CHamplain etc. I've never heard of that happening to a Ranger and seeing that happen to Aaron Martin's boat prompted me to chose Ranger when I debated the same decision you are facing today.

The 'Cossa' material has proven it self long before Phoenix put it to use. It's great stuff, super strong and light. Put any reservations about it to rest.
Also, I'm sure most people do not try and run as hard as the top pros in less than ideal situations. That said, there have been a many engine shear off the boats at the jackplate over the years of ANY brand.
This is a very old thread and even though I personally have some different opinions.... your assessment other wise is fair.

regardless of that, if this thread were to be posted today, the correct boat would be the 819/919 and because it is wider up front, it would compare TM down with the Ranger.

Just to let everyone know, I ended up with the 920. I went with the 250 Verado Pro engine and I am extremely happy with my decision.

THe bolts didn't break, they sheared through the hull. As for the Ranger pictured, it looks to me based on the fact that it is strapped to the trailer that this guy ran into a rock or something hard. Since no details were given, that would be my assumption. We know Aaron didn't hit anything but a wave. BTW, I'm not anti Phoenix at all. I just shared why I chose a Ranger over a Phoenix. It was better to fish from and I questioned the long term transom integrity due to Aaron's public experience.
No sir, they broke. Replaced the bolts and fished the rest of the season. Read the statement from Aaron they "snapped" and it wasn't just a wave, it was series of large boat wakes that would of done damage to any brand out there.
And do you realize Phoenix has had a wide decked 19 footer for two years now? I love New Jersey! He is so far behind he probably doesn't know Tracker Marine now owns Ranger. Shh, nobody tell him.

I recall Bassmaster blog had photos (now apparently removed) showing a totally different story, but maybe my memory of it is wrong. I made a choice based on my experience and my concerns with a new boat brand and sandwiched foam transom construction. Am I wrong to think sandwiched foam will deteriate over time? Time will tell. I will say again, for the third time, I am not against Phoenix, I just made a choice. As for the wide 19 foot deck....I said the Ranger fishes better from the trolling motor and has a bigger front deck. Take a ruler and go measure them both. Make sure to measure the width at the trolling motor and the length of the deck. Now, as for the other attempts at belittling me and my current (but hopefully temparary residence in NJ)....when I graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC (my home state and apparently yours too) and left for college, NC still had rulers and Americans still had choices. For the record, Bass Pro owns Ranger, not Tracker Marine. Tracker Marine, Nitro, Tahoe, Stratos and a handful of others are also owned by BPS. It is clear, you're behind. Maybe the internet is slower back home in NC.

No belittling ment on my part sir, I apologize if I came off that way. I just wanted to cortect your belevie that the transom failed, when it was in fact the bolts that broke and it was in fact a series of large boat wakes. You certainly have every right to be concerned about the construction of any boat brand, and certainly should purchase what you feel is the best boat, but don't think for a minute that Ranger hasn't had their share of problems. I have owned both brands now and feel both are great boats.
I was responding to TritonJT's post. I have driven the 920. There isn't a finer riding boat in my opinion. I went with history and fish-ability while sacrificing ride quality and maneuverability. When it comes time to trade in my Ranger, I will still be torn between the two brands and will have to make another tough decision.
We all learn the hard way... Even I fell for the R boat koolaid.
