    Water Pump on 200 Evinrude

Hi guys, I'm changing the water pump on a 1995 Evinrude Vindicator 200. I was kind of using Sherms Tips but his is for a Merc. I've got all the bolts out and the lower unit came down approx 1 or 2 inches and won't come any further. What am I missing?

Thank you! Have a great evening

did you remove the shift lever pin? you probably did not it is up under the cowl and the air box, replace the lu and get a friend to shift the boat into and out of nutral you may also need to take the belly pan off to accrss the pin easier. But as he/she shifts it you will see it you need to remove the pin and then the lower unit will drop. Is a btch to get back need 4 hands to do it properly especially if the first time. Good Luck, one of the guru's will probably be on to help you some better

Pull the port belly pan, under the bottom carbs you'll see the shift rod. there is a slotted 3/8" head taper bolt , unscrew it. The LU will drop. Here is a tip, pull the prop off before dropping, it will take 15#'s off the LU. Tell everyone to go watch TV or drink a beer as too many helpers will mess up your job. Raise up the LU and have one of them9/16" head bolts ready when you pop it up. Get a few threads in and make sure the linkage is lined up with the collett.

I am assuming the "port belly pan" is the carb cover? The bottom bolt of the carb cover was a bear. I found the slotted screw you are talking about. Never would have found that. Good grief.
The only help I have right now is me. Funny how all your buddies disappear when the work needs to be done. I'll bet $10 they are looking for a ride in the morning.............

Thank you for the input. I'm sure I will be checking in again later. I have my laptop sitting on the deck of the boat.

The port belly pan is the left side unscrew all of the bolts should be 4 and pull it off. the linkage pin is under the carbs, Shift to reverse and off she'll come.

Re: Water Pump on 200 Evinrude (ChampioNman)

I just got done changing the impeller on mine.

TIP: Don't let friends touch the lower unit without telling you!! My bud was screwing with the shift rod turning it in and out!!!

Went to put it back together and I lost forward??? Took about several tries till I got
the manual and checked the shift rod measurement! Then he told me that he was messing with it!!

Needs to say it went back together and worked great. Follow the steps on the JohhnyRude tips page and you'll be fine. Just don't mess with the shift rod!!

Re: Water Pump on 200 Evinrude (JoePA)

In the beginning, according to the instructions it says to shift in reverse and pull the shift rod pin. The later on it says to shift the boat back into forward AND to push the rod on the lower unit DOWN into reverse prior to sliding it back together.

I am currently trying to put the shift rod pin back in but am confused as to the process. Is it ok now to shift the boat in and out of Forward/Neutral/Reverse to make it fit?

The lower unit is bolted back on. I am in the final stages........
    Thanks all

Yep you can move the linkage back and forth to line it up, should have been in reverse from the start, but could have jumped into fwd when you re-installed the LU. No big deal.

I went ahead and hooked it up to try it. It goes into forward and neutral with no problems. It just won't go back into Reverse. Any thoughts?

Re: Water Pump on 200 Evinrude (Tom in Stl)

If your sure you did'nt turn the shift shaft when you removed the LU you may not have the bolt through the hole in the shaft. The bolt may be riding on top of the shift shaft(something to check). Also make sure that the slight bend in the shaft is facing fwd.

I just rebuilt my lower unit and instead of measuring the shaft in the neutral position I just counted the revolutions it took to get it out. With the bend in the shaft facing aft I started the shaft and screw it in CW 8.5 turns and the bend ends up in the fwd position.

Re: Water Pump on 200 Evinrude (Tom in Stl)

Try this, reach under the bottom carb and grab the linkage, pull up, with out anything hooked up (linkage wise) and see if the drive shaft engages, (turn it manually). should be reverse. Bad thing is you'll have to drop the LU to make Shift rod adjustmts, they are critical.

guess i'm the perfect example of why you should take your motor to qualified mechanics. Good grief..............
I sure appreciate all of your help on this. I'll have to try that tomorrow after work.

Re: Water Pump on 200 Evinrude (THE WITCHDOCTOR)

    Witch Doctor:
I apologize for jumping into the middle of this thread, but why do you need to do number 17 & 18 in those instructions? You already have the lu in reverse, then you put the shifter in forward and put the lu in reverse again. I am lost as to what is going on there.
When I have replaced water pumps in I/Os you shift the LU into forward and leave it there until you get it all back together again.

Thanks in Advance for educating this poor fool.

I found that confusing myself. I didn't have a chance to pull my lower unit tonight. I may not get to it until this weekend. I will keep ya'll posted as to what I do. Maybe my mishaps can help someone else.

So, should I back track and try moving the shift rod?

You don't have to pull the LU to check the engagement. Just push the lever down for forward and up for reverse. If you've put the prop back on then just spin it with your foot. Easier if you have the belly pan off though.

Re: Water Pump on 200 Evinrude (ChampioNman)

wanna hear something funny? I decided just to bite the bullet and have the dealer fix it for me. I'm tired of messing with it and bothering you guys with it. I should have done this in the first place but tried to save a buck. So I called the local Evinrude dealer 1 mile from my house and she told me they didn't have an opening until the third week of October. I asked (very politely) if I could get anything sooner since I had some tournaments coming up. She told me to go get a manual and figure it out myself.............that's the last dime I spend at that place. I called a friend of mine at the triton dealer and they told me to bring it right up and they would fix it on Saturday to get me on the water (I have a stratos) .

Again, thanks to everyone who tried to help me. I sincerely appreciate the help.
