Wanted to Know what you opinion of this motor is. Looking at a boat that has one on it and the motor has been completely upgraded including pistons and rings, fuel injectors, as well as the computer system. What can I expect out of this motor?

Anyone??? I am looking at the top of the line model intruder for that year, sorry I cannot provide the actual serial number for it...
Try doing a search in this forum under "Ficht" and see what you come up with. It has been talked about many times.
I think the general consensus is that 1998 was a bad year for the FICHT motors, but I have no experience with them.

I'd stay away from it. I take that back, I'd run away from it. Those have LOTS of problems.
I would not rcommend buying it unless your getting it for next to nothing. Like Free Maybe. We do have several out there running well but for the most part all that new stuff you just mentioned is why you do not want to buy one. If it is on a boat you are wanting just picture it with a E-Tec and see if you willing to spend that kind of money to repower it.
If the engine your looking at has all the upgrades including PINNED HEADS it is as good as any other outboard, and faster than most in that horse power range. Just keep em clean inside, tuner twice a year, carbon gaurd & 2 + 4 in every tank of fuel. Tight lines to ya. Brian

Look at the injectors, if they screw into the cylinder heads and are fastened by a very large hex-nut, about 1.5", stay away from it unless it is priced at $0.00. If the injectors are bolted to the heads with an oval flange, then be sure to buy it for next to nothing.
there is no resale value to the '98 motors and the 150-175 '99's, even though some run well, but they are expensive to maintain and few techs are familiar with servicing them.
Just call up a bunch of dealers and ask what ( or if ) they will give you for trade in. That should give you an idea of what they are worth.

I know 2 local dealers here that won't even rebuild them. If you come in with 1 blown up they advise finding another motor. They both say there is no way they will rebuild one and give any kind of warranty on it and the only way they could fix it to get it to maybe hold together it would cost more than its worth. I also know of a few of them still going and going strong but I can remember guys who bought these new having them in the shop all the time.
Yep it is sad, but everybody is telling the truth. this motor and the 175 sank OMC. I have a bud that OMC owed $1M in back billing and they got the bend over, when they went belly up!.
You'all are pretty funny. Have any of you ever run one, or is this just what you have heard. Ipersonally have been running a 1998 175 Johnson Ficht FastStrike SERIAL #G0450412B, that I've been running since 2000 with no problems.
If you know anything about Ficht motors ,you need to run them hard. They would load up and foul ,causing carbon problems thus blow-ups. This is why they had the original up date with the pinned head , this was to atomize the fuel charge better preventing the build up in the cylinders,
With that said my motor has around 300 hours and still running strong.
WHY??????![]()

Your just one of the lucky few. 300 hours isn't much at all.
wise sorry to be a donkey butt , but maybe you should read the posts better, they stated there are some THAT run good, and yours may be one, but as stated OMC went under with that engine and the 175. BOMB redid it in later models and they worked a little better and have since improved on them, but stiil the point is YOU may have a good one and you may just be on your last hour with it. another good engine in these terms was the black promax of the mid to late 90's , another blow up waiting to happen. cost merc many millions in claims but not as much as OMC as they kind of caught them in time and recalled motors up the wazoo, I know as mine on my gambler was one. so keep your fingerscrossed we dont read about you looking for a power head in the next couple months

I have a customer that has a 1998. He pays me well to keep it running because no other dealer would touch it. Ignition modules are not cheap and they failed, Air cooled ECUs, not cheap & they failed. I can go on & on but I won't. He has 744 hours now.
Some one in here asked for a professional opinion and It looks like we all agree. Just to dicuss hours, I have a tow motor 2001 150 DI with almost 3000hour on it. It's got a BRP EMM, 6 BRP Injectors, BRP stator, & a hole list of BRP goodies. All were done before 1000hours. It's still runs great & it was given to us by SEATOW for free. Thanks to BRP it's problems for the most part are gone. If you can not install newer BRP DI components I would not Purchase it unless It was Real Cheap or free. A 1998 can not take the main 2002-2006 engine parts.
You could be right that is the chance we all take. I have friends with newer mercs and yammies that have already blown , one had a 150 v-max carb and the other had a 200 merc EFI and my old trouble maker is still running.
Go Figure, Why do you say it's a bad motor. I think it's all about taking care of what you got , Having said that look at all of the new HPDI's and POPTI MAX'S, and even BRP lettin loose, that does mean that they are about to blow at any time too???
Sorry for my opinion, I and "maybe we" were not tring to bash your motor. We all hope it works well for you. If it does start to have issues just remember BRP did not biuld it & it is not the same as what they fixed when they Bought The Assets Of J&E.
I don't think any of us wish your motor fails.
my dealer told me if they make it past 50 hrs then they have a chance to make it.mine has over 400 hrs 99 175. also penzoil killed alot of them.![]()

While mine isn't a small block I will chirp in to say my 99 225 has 672 hours on it. With nothing other than a replaced injector and usual updates according to the serial info the gurus in here gave me. (second owner here)
Chip
The Big blocks didn't have many problems. The 60* killed them. Yep there are a bunch of 98's out there running but....A bunch that ain't.
As the guys said........ It's a roll of the dice. Do ya feel lucky? JMHO
