OPOC engine (for the gear heads)

"Opposing Piston Opposing Cylinders" seems to be the next big thing. Opposing piston technology has been around for decades. Diesel opposing piston engines were used in submarines in WWII, with some still in use today in the industrial world. The opposing cylinder concept is new, though, and shows some real promise. IF it meets the emissions part.

Interesting! I'll let them take my 6.0 powerstroke and I'll take one of those!

We have a development contract to design turbos for them.

    Re: (mhr650)

we used to run the double opposed engines in our dredges, they were old surpluse submarine engines, took a ton of UMPH to get them running but once started, very hard to kill.

Incorrect sir...................the Boxer engine was not the same Design as an OPOC.

    Re: (R.D.)

It has some features of a Napier/Deltic diesel. These are two stroke opposed piston engines that have the combustion chambers shared by two pistons but have crankshafts at the apex of the triangle.

You're right RD. The concept from the WWII sub engines had a single combustion chamber share by the opposing pistons with crankshafts on the top and bottom. VW, Porche, and others have a single crank and seperate combustion chambers.

Here's a pic of one of the sub engines turning a natural gas compressor. They still have a couple working offshore today.

They still use some of those engines in the big pump stations down here in the everglades. The one pump station I worked on had 6 of them and the turn like a 10' impeller to lift water out of canals and pump water into the glades. There huge.

    Re: (krainium)

    Everything old is new again

Here is a piston and cylinder liner from a Detroit Diesel 71 Series engine. Notice the scavenging ports in the cylinder liner, just like the cylinders in the video. The Detroit engine has been around since 1938, and I still work on them today. There are estimated to be a few hundred thousand of them worldwide still in service, although by current clean air standards they are a dirty engine and are quickly being phased out.

The engine in the video is neat. He mentioned it has an efficiency of around 40%, which is astonishing for an internal combustion engine. Modern diesels run in the ballpark of 25% efficiency, and gasoline engines are even lower than that. Now the tough part - getting enough interest to make it a reality.
