    Johnson problems/ update

let me just say Im new to Johnson motors. I recently bought a Cobra 180 with a 150 Johnson. I went to start in last wed( I bought it tuesday night) and flooded the crap out of it, never got it started. Took it home hooked a strap on it and finally got it to start and run. Took it out Thursday and had a hard time starting it again but after it started did not want to idle. ( Idle is set @ 600, I think its to low) When i got home I pulled the cawling off and the plugs were completly oil saturated, Oil was actually coming out of the cylinders ( not much) . The problems i was having with the Idle and topend. I was running<> 5800 rpm's at like 51-52 mph. Would the plugs cause these problems and if so how do i take care of it.

Sorry for the long version, thanks in advance
    Rob

    Model # is J150ELE its a 96'.

And to top it off now the boat will not get on pad. its loading up and dying.

when i finally get it started, it doesnt want to idle, It will not get on pad.

Is it posibly that Im flooding it out when I do the initial start up. It has elect. fuel pump. I was told by previous owner to pump bulb a few times, then choke and it will fire on 1st try. I have been pumping the bulb till it gets hard and turning it over and choking it.

Should I put new plugs in again and make sure there at .030. and take it out and only pump it once?

Not a real big fan of the electric FP's. the regulator has to be set properly, and the delivery system has to be solid. I'd pull the plugs and check them, put in fresh plugs QL78YC's at .030. Try it with no choke but give the pump a chance to pressure up the system. Turn on the key no choke and give it 5-10 seconds, then turn the key to start. Should bust off.

I've tried every plug known to man on my older Rudes, and Johnnys. And I have never had a plug that runs em motors like the Champs. JMHO

    Re: Johnson problems (CobraRob)

OK. I used De-Carb just as directed, and put new plugs in Champion Ql78yc gapped at .030 tight. I also was directed to lose the elect. fuel pump. So I did, now motor seems to run better, idles good, but the pump ball looses pressure. I checked all connections up to the fuel rail on the carbs and everthing seems good and my splice from ex-elect. fuel pump is fine. When I pump the ball i can hear gurguling(sp?) from the middle seat/ ice chest. Is this normal. I have a full tank of gas. When the ball is pumped it stays solid w/ motor running (idle) for 3-5 mins.

The VRO was disconnected by previous owner. is there any thing to look for here? The fuel line going up to VRO is plugged off and the backside of where the VRO would be is capped aswell.

    help me out please.

Rob, are you running gas or are you forced to used e10? If it's E10, that might be what's causing the problem.

I know from what you've posted, it doesn't sound like a e10 issue, but with 10% ethanol in gas, it's causing all kinds of problems over in my neck of the woods.
