    Small Block V6 E-TEC owners

    150, 175, 200

These are new this year. How are yours working. Good and bad.

Am I the only one having major prolems. It's a 150. I hope this is the case.

How many hours do you estimate on yours?

    Hoping mine settles down soon.

My 150HO has been running great since May. The only problem turned out to be a rigging issue. I would guess I have in excess of 30 hours on mine but I'll know for sure tomorrow when I take it in for the latest update.

We have 2 150's in commercial use. Both have over 600 hours on them. No problems. Have a few 200's but all have under 50 hours on them. The only problem we have had was with the incorrect throttle pickup on the very early models.

Re: Just rigged one on Army Corps of Engineers' patrol boat

Just rigged an ETEC 150 Saltwater motor on a patrol boat for the Army Corps of Engineers on Lake Lanier (25mi N. of Atlanta, GA) Boston Whaler 19ft Sentry with cabin and LOADED with gear. We removed a 2004 140hp 4-stroke Johnson (Suzuki) from the boat. The ETEC turned a 14x22 Raker for testing and the holeshot was surprisingly good with 46 to 49mph (5mph gain over 4stroke). We sent it out with a 14x20 3-blade aluminum prop to improve towing capability and increase the fuel economy at their normal operating conditions, and to lower the replacement costs cuz they tear up the props pretty regularly. I'm going to keep close tabs on it's performance and maintenance requirements.

PS: Installed a 3gallon oil tank in lieu of the 1.8gallon tank and programmed it for XD100 oil so only one operator can be in charge of adding oil. We are keeping them on a 100hr maintenance interval for gearlube and checking for fault codes only, otherwise 300hrs/3yrs on the rest of the maintenance.

over 600 hours sounds great. What kind of oil and oil burn rate are they programmed for?

Hotline has asked me to switch from XD100 to XD50 for a while. Also looks like they are going to try a 17 Rebel instead of the 19 Viper. May have it back Friday.

All our ETEC's go out with the XD100 oil. We do not give the customers the option. THey have to state to us to program for the XD50. They are running aluminum 15" wheels. One is installed on a 25' Chawk and the other commerical is running a 24' Tcraft. Both run in shallow water at times to get to some of there gear. This is the reason for the aluminum wheels. I have only heard of them asking not to run the XD100 oil is on this site.

I don't believe any of the Mods said not to run XD-100 on any DFI or E-Tec motors.

No the mods have not stated it. There were a few post I believe where the poster's have stated it after talking t customer service.

Re: Small Block V6 E-TEC owners (johnrude)

I for one posted the on XD50 oil reuest. The request was from the Evinrude Hotline Tech.
I have blown two power heads, on the same motor, in a short time. Hotline told me that engineering had requested that I use XD50 for a while on the new power head.

I assume, but not told directly, that a "short while" is the time it takes to inspect the old power head and try to figure out what is going on. Again, only an assumption on my part.

BRP is sending 6 gallons of Oil -no charge. BRP will also pay dealer to purge and set up for XD 100 at a later date. BRP also sending a another prop to try. I can't argue with that. Just doing some research on my own to see what the folks that are not having problems are using.

    Re: (cajun bill)

I'm at 27 hours with XD100 from the start. I've run about 50% at 1000 RPM's or less, 30% over 5000, and it's been started 318 times. I was amazed at what's available in the diagnostics. Now it's running better than ever after the latest update.

I have 50 hours on my 150 and have been running brand X oil (standard Mercury TCW3 rated) since day 1 with zero problems. The motor has been flawless. Runs even smoother with updated software. As good as advertised!

    rqlt29a

Will you please share some more details on the boat.
    What HP motor?
    What shaft length?
    What size boat?
    Single or twin?
    How did it fail?
    Prop size?
    Oil used?
    Latest update of firmware installed?

Looking for a common thread with my two failures.

    Thanks

    Re: Small Block V6 E-TEC owners (pioneer197)

    Have a 175 hp, 33 hours with XD100 from the start, prop Rebell 15 1/4" x 19"

The only thing I have to complain about its little sensitive at the throttle around 3000 RPM if I just give it little more gas it jumps up to 3500 RPM.

The best is now I can drive my boat at idle speed and it drinks 0,16 gal/hr, speed 2,8 - 3,5 mph.

Re: Small Block V6 E-TEC owners (Stwal)

Stwal- I had exact same problem with my 150. There is a new throttle cam to fix this. I hope you have better dealers there than here. The only way I could get this done without waiting indefinately was to buy the part and install it myself.
It took 10 minutes and now the power curve is smooth and powerful with no lurching. It cost me 15.25 Cdn.

Re: Small Block V6 E-TEC owners (Springseeker)

    Springseeker

What is yot RPM at WOT?
Envinrude is trying to get mine up 5300.

I have Viper 19 and get 5050 at WOT.
Dealer tried a Rebel 17 and got about 5200 today, Lost 3 mph.
Looking for 17 Viper to try.

My 150 is on a 19 degree deadrise 20 foot center console. 1900 pound bare hull. One person, about 40 gal of gas , three batteries and trolling motor, T-Top - 47.6 mph on the gps at 5050 RPM with the Viper 19.

    Re: Small Block V6 E-TEC owners (pioneer197)

Pioneer- I'm running a 17.5 ft. Lund walleye boat with 95" beam and 1400 lb. dry weight. The prop is basic aluminum 3 blade 14.25X19. Max hp rating is 150.
With several hundred lbs of gear,27 US gallons of fuel and 3 people on board I can get just over 5300.The motor has unreal torque and does not seem to labour at any rpm but it runs "sweet "at 3500-4500 rpm and 30-45 mph.Top speed so far on gps is 52 and that's way too fast for me!
I had a few issues with the engine
1.-On initial start up it would not idle under 1100 rpm. No code or reason was found and it never re-occured.
2.-Before I had a new map update it was very rough between 1200 and 2000 rpm.
3.-After the upgrade there was no way to run at 2000-3000 rpm. It would only go 15 mph or at least 28. A newly designed throttle cam fixed that.
So far the only negative I have with BRP is that there is poor dealer support here and a definate lack of knowledge or training comparedto what the guys on this site know. I had to plan my upgrade 900 miles away while on holidays and install and pay for the throttle cam myself.Hope you get fixed up soon!

    Re: Small Block V6 E-TEC owners (pioneer197)

I have just over 400 hours on a pair of 175 ETECs. Had a few false low oil pressure alarms in the first 10 hours. This was fixed initially. I went to the 300 hour mark without having to touch the engines again. During the 300 hour service, my mechanic installed a new MAP. The false low oil pressure alarms returned. BRP provided two new oil pumps which were changed under warranty. Since then, I've put a little over 100 hours on the engines without incident.
