i checked out my evinrude trim motor by hot wiring the blue and green wire. i was able to get the trim to go up and down in this manner. i also checked the up relay by checking the red wire for 12 volts and checked the blue and white wire to see if i got 12 volts when i pushed the up button. everything seemed to check out. any other ideas to check before i buy a new motor?

Why buy a new motor when the trim motor works OK when putting the juice to it?
It will take some more troubleshooting, but most problems are relay related. Substitute both of them if you can. Don't forget that one relay delivers the 12 volts postive to one side of the trim motor when engergized by the trim switch while the other relay makes the ground circuit.

ok seahorse started to troubleshoot and i replaced both relays. ended up not changing anything. both relays will click when i hit the up and down button.
will a bad wire either from the front tilt switch, the one by the console or maybe the one at the motor cause this problem? i have a gambler 209 if that helps. there is a lever by the tilt motor underneath the motor which i assume is what controls the tilt guage on the console. that quit working earlier this year. i don't know if that might be linked to this problem. i appreciate all of your help..
If both new relays click when the up and the down buttons are pressed, then the primary circuits are working. What you have to trace is the secondary wiring from the relays to the trim motor connector, since you said the trim motor works when you jump 12 volts to it.

well on to the next. i'm checking the blue wire and green wire going to motor. when i put my volt meter on both of those wires at the relay side of the plug i don't get any reading when i push the up,down button,but if i ground one side and check either wire i can get 12 volts. also when i checked the motor yesterday, there was quite a bit of an arc when i made contact.
Disconnect the big red plug at the motor and try the trim on the motor. Up/Down move forward to the front.
