    power loss question

Hi guys. my 02 225 ho has all of a sudden had a sharp drop in power. the holeshot is very sluggish and I'm running almost 10mph slower on my gps. The weird thing is that I'm still getting roughly the same rpm (eventually) at WOT. I had the reed gaskets replaced recently and the motor was running great. Now I'm smelling a little gas while I'm running and it's kind of loping at idle. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks

    Re: power loss question (jbradfishn)

Mine has been in the shop 3 times since July 1st with the same problem, except I'm losing about 1000 rpms also. So far waiting on a replacement silencer sleeve for the carb. But it runs perfect if you take the whole air intake cover off and run it. The intake was not clogged and one would really think that the sleeve doesn't make that much difference since it runs great with the whole cover off. When I left the shop today they were at a loss and were calling Jonhson to get more info. May or may not be your problem also. I will post when I they get to the bottom of it and having it running right. They did go ahead and break down all 6 carbs. last week and that didn't make a difference at all. Hope your problem is minor cause mine has already ran up just a bit over $1000.

    Re: power loss question (rogersauburn)

I would be very careful on running it without the airbox, as it does lean them out a bunch and usually will burn the pistons out very shortly!

Prime the bulb at idle and see if the problem gets worse. If it does, replace the fuel pump. A damaged diaphram may be letting fuel enter the block thru the pulse fitting. If it is a Carburated engine. If it is a DI, we need to look elsewhere. Model# please/?

    It's a DI motor. The model # is E225FHLSNF.

If your smelling gas, the liftpump may be bad. Get it checked. Check the plugs for even burn, any that are wet with fuel. Have the high pressure pump and the vapor seporator checked at the same time. If the vapor seporator is leaking, you will smell fuel. Have the tech look at all the fuel lines at the rear of the engine, make sure there are no leaks.
