    Re: Depression? (SasquatchTriton)

I HEAR ya man! I am now coming down the back side of it. Been out of it for a couple months now. ABSOLUTELY see your doctor!! Mine started with worrying about EVERYTHING!! Then went to anger and frustration. Shortness with every little thing. Then turned to NO sleep. For a couple weeks there I was only getting about an hours sleep a night,( not good sleep either). My wife was getting really scared. I was seeing things that werent there. But most of all......I had no interest in fishing!!! Recently my Dr has gotten my meds adjusted and I am catching up on my sleep. I NEVER want to go through that again!!! She, ( the Dr), said it can start with a chemical im-balance in the brain. My wife also suffered through this a while back. Now I better understand what she went through. If you need to talk, ever, IM me anytime! Hang in there, it does get better!

I am a fisherman for life! I will always be a fisherman! It's not something I do, it is who I am. Fishing is not an escape, it is where I belong, where I am supposed to be. It is not a place, but a life long journey. It is a passage my father showed me and that I will show others.

    Re: Depression? (bassfins)

thank you ALL for your honest responses!

    to answer a few questions:

my health is good, im no longer working long hours (until april again when we ramp up production) BUT i do lose sleep over stupid things and cant let my mind wind down at night from constant nonsense worrying about every trivial thing. i never used to be like this until our finacial fiasco. unfortunalty my lack of sleep has caused me to wake up late and unfortunaly be late to work recently, in result i had a union steward come to me yesterday and tell me i an getting written up for having 3 tardies recently. this kind of sent me over the edge.

winter does play hard on me, just miss the fishing and being able to be out on the water and relax takes its toll. even though it has been a very mild winter here and temps have been in the 40's-60's. i havent even SEEN my boat since the end of November maybe i need to take a visit one of these nicer days and realize how good i have it and all the good times i will have this summer with my daughter being a little older and being able to take her out on the water more often.

once again thank you guys for everything, i usually dont post things like this but figured i could come to you guys for some advice

    Re: Depression? (SasquatchTriton)

Hang in there, I'm going through it myself. Can't say my depression is caused by the exact things your experiencing, but depression is depression. I have a different set of problems that really makes me miserable. Mine stems from marriage, family, and job issues. I am currently seeing a counselor and the past month has been much better. Sometimes it's just a matter of talking to someone so that you can let the frustration and stress out of your body. I'm now on the right path to being happier, I just have to keep at it. Just like you got out of your financial mess, you can do this too with the right approach.

I'm going to throw something else in the mix and suggest that you consider doing a financial makeover (a la Dave Ramsey or something similar). You may find that being more than a half step ahead of the bill collectors will give you the peace of mind that you seek. By all means, treat the anxiety/depression symptoms now but also treat the root cause.

    Good luck.

Coming from a different angle.Who takes care of the money in the family? You should take care of the money that you are working so hard for and so many hours.Hell no wonder your depressed, you are working your ass off 7/24's and can't get ahead,I would be depressed to. When you handle the money, even if your blowing it at the horse track or doing drugs you know exectly where the money is going. If your wife is handling the money ,you don't know where the money is going, like to her family, her boy friend ,her bad habits, who knows, start handling the cash and your blues will melt away.

Because of my profession, I'm always thinking of nutrition and it's impact on our lives. Was literally just reading an article that referenced a few studies showing how Omega-3 supplementation, particularly ones high in DHA and EHA (the third omega-3, ALA, we get plenty of in our diet), have been shown beneficial in mood disorders such as depression.

Don't know if I will be able to find a link, but I'll look. The article was in a trade periodical.

Good point. And if she doesn't like the idea- all the more reason to know what the problem is...

Well the doc gave me some zoloft. Im supposed to give it 3 weeks and see how it works out. They gave me the option to do some counsiling, but we will see.

I really dont think the wife is doing ANY of that. She is actually one of the only people i can go to to talk with about these things.

Well, in my opinion, you got some incorrect advice. According to God's teachings ... when you are married, you become ONE. Not "ME & YOU" ... but "US". You should BOTH be handling the money. Buy a QuickBooks program, do NOT password it, and use it to keep up with your funds, to pay your bills (it will write the checks for you if you want) and then use it to balance the bank statement every month. You should BOTH handle the money in an honest and open fashion. My marriage went through that, and one person being in charge of the money (and the worries about the bills) simply doesn't work as well. A marriage is a partnership ... you share EVERYTHING.

As for the wife being the only one you can talk to ..... God hears every word you utter and is there for you 24/7/365. You and her need to talk openly about your salvation and your thoughts about religion. If you are struggling, that can give you a peace of mind that you have never had before.

Sorry about the sermon, but I can't honestly sit here as a Christian and not try to help a Brother that has reached out for help. My family will put you guys on our prayer list. And please don't hesitate to reach out again if you feel the need.

Obviously, follow the doc's advice, see how the meds work. Also, take a look at your diet and exercise. I'll tell you now that since I changed my eating and started a little more exercise, my BP has gone down, and I have more energy. I'm still cynical and cranky, but I feel better while being cynical and cranky. Use the meds, but see if there's a way to get off them. Just my .02.

now go take the time to sit and read about Zoloft .. how your body works with it, the loading time, the side effects, etc. Just so you're really aware. You're already dealing with strong emotions, now adding a medication that should have a positive effect on those. Knowing what it can and can't do will just help you.

Guys these are all very good points but only one person (hair Jig) has pointed to the best solution. I will leave you this: Read Phillipians 4:13. If that don't make you feel better nothing will. God bless and we will be thinking and praying for your situation.

While I am a firm believer in Gods love and grace I'm going to disagree with you here. If he had cancer and needed treatment would you say that the bible was the best option and forego treatment? Depression is a physical disease that has a major affect on your mental state of mind. While I agree that God and the bible are a very good thing to rely on, you also need some help sometime.
