I had a job once that I was working my way up from the bottom of the pay scale at. The old maximum hours for minimum pay routine. We had a bunch of work to get out the door and I was working 7 days a week. I reached my straight time salary by the end of August when the overtime slowed down. When I did my taxes that year I had to give back almost 3 months of overtime on top of my normal taxes. If I had just worked my 40 hours a week that year I would of had nearly the same pay after taxes.

I think you don't understand how that works. Spending $1,000 to save $175 in taxes doesn't work out too well.

Then give up every middle class luxury you currently have and take some big gambles to climb out that class. You have the freedom to do so in this great country.

I have to agree with what you are saying about spending $1000 to save $175 in taxes. BUT it is obvious you have not put enough thought into how to make it work.

Tell me about it. I was very blessed last year and had the best sales year of my career. But to look at how much I paid in taxes will make you want to drive off a bridge. I also usually get back a couple of grand in a refund, but this time I owe $165...which actually isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I paid more in Federal income taxes this past year than my gross salary a few years back. Crazy!
I just took a pretty good kick in the nuts. I've always had to pay at the end of the year, $3-$4K every year. Well, I just went to pay roll and changed my withholdings from married and 1 to single and zero.I'll be losing $370 a pay period. That's $740 a month gone, just that quick. If I still owe after this year I don't know what I'll do after that.
Maybe I can get a loan from someone that gets back more than they pay in?
What the hell is it like to get a refund? I guess I'll just say I'm blessed because I haven't seen one in years. I'm pretty sure I'm going to take another major pop like last year. I've been taking more and more each pay check every year and I still can't seem to get it right. They hit me for $4800 more last year. Afraid to see what this years going to be like.

I've had some big refunds in the past...but only because a large portion of my pay is sales commission, and they take out a huge portion for taxes on the front end of those checks. So yeah, I may have gotten a big refund but the reality was that I had just be giving the gov't a free loan of my money all year. I even changed my deductions to where it was married with like 6 dependents (I only have 3) to get less taken out every month. It helped, but until this year i was still getting sizable refunds.

How is giving up the luxuries and gambling going to lower what you owe uncle sam? At the other end of the rainbow waits a 35% tax bracket if you keep the business in America.
To bad you weren't a multi-millionaire. You would be in a lower tax bracket.

And still pay more than all of us on BBC. Just a thought, they may pay a lower percentage but they will still pay more in 1 year than most of us will in a lifetime. I guess it's all in how you look at it.

Does a lower bracket always mean they take less? Buffet may have paid less in percentage than his secretary...but he still PAID IN 6.9 MILLION!!! If he wanted to pay more he was free to stroke the check instead of scamming an oil/railroad deal and playing politics. At least he should hold his head high and be proud he did it and count the jobs he saved as he counts the cash he is making.
How many BBC's do you think it takes to make up ONE PERSON who paid in 6.9 MILLION IN ONE YEAR?????![]()
It's always the next person who should pay in more. How about we start with those that zero out or pay nothing in taxes and see where that goes before we stick more taxes on the people that provide the income that gets taxed? Just my feeble pea brain working.
The wife and I made about the same amount per year (until I retired last May). We had been having the maximum withheld, with zero deductions. Still owed about $1,500 a year. Last year, I noticed that I was being penalized ($80?) for not having enough withheld. So I called the IRS and asked how they can do that, when we've both been having our employers withhold the maximum. They said I should be sending them more, but didn't say how I should do that. I asked why we can't have more withheld by our employers? "We can only do what Congress authorizes". The buck stops there...so get out and vote all them bastards OUT!!! Where is the "rant" icon, Al????![]()
Don't bother me, I'm screwing for virginity.
I killed a 12-pack just to watch it die.
I have them take the max out plus 80 every two weeks just to break even.
My wife started working this year so our income went up....It pushed us into a 4 percent higher fed income tax bracket...
Part of it was my fault and I didn't plan accordingly....![]()

Put as much of your raise as you can into retirement investments....That will take some of the bite out of taxes......and help to prepare you for a future down the road...
