    E-Tec Surging or loping ?????

Any of you guys with the 225 or 250 etecs ever have this trouble? I had ideled down a no wake zone about 15 minutes and when I went to get on plain it felt like I lost a cylinder. At about 3000 rpms the motor started to surge up and down and could not get any more than 4800 - 5000. No alarms sounded, it continued this for about 4 miles then started clearing up, by the time I had gone about 8 miles it seemed to be OK but off by about 150-200 rpms at WOT. But now I have a very noticeable shudder at about 1700 rpms.

    Mod #E250DPLSO Ser. # 05113412

I would also Say that this has been the most pefect running outboard I have ever owned till now I just hope it is something easy to fix and very quick I have a tournament this coming weekend.

Pull a sparkplug and look at the gap, if it is wide like around .040", take it to your dealer for a temperature test per a service bulletin, new deflector pins and sparkplugs, and updated software. It will all be warranty including the plugs. If your dealer gives you grief, call BRP customer service with the serial number. An intermittent crankshaft position sensor can also give a similar symptom.

I haven't had anything like that....had one little injector issue that was quickly fixed by my dealer at 1.9hrs, 27hrs on it now and not another problem. Sounds like it's time to visit your friendly BRP tech.

Talk to the service manager first to see if they have the deflector pin kits in stock, and the plugs too.

Gary, mine does something similar to what you describe... well, except for it seems to "come out of it" much quicker. Within a minute-or-two it's got most of it's wind back. I have noticed the top-end seems to be dinged by appx 100-200RPM's...

Great, just heading into prime-time and I've got to screw with an '05 motor.... not on my "fun to do" list... Somebody tell me again why I sold my '97 ?

    Dave,

Mine is at the dealer right now. As was said above it is probably a quick fix. I will keep you guys posted as to how I make out. I am picking boat up on the 29th. I am still very happy with my etec. For brand new tecnoligy it seems to have very few growing pains. Get yours to the dealer and let then fix it for you. Don't worry be happy . I hope your dealer is closer than 3 hours .

    Gary -

Good luck with it. Hope it does turn out to be a quick-fix. Hope you don't mind, I'm going to follow the trail you blaze on this one once you've got her back-and-fixed.

PS. Should have added a "Thanks" to Seahorse for the detailed response above. Great that these guys are part of this community, my lousy attitude above is directly attributed to (potentially) being without the boat during prime-time (as Gary knows, "prime time" is way too short for us yankee-northern-types ;-) Didn't mean to direct that at anyone here, of course.. Dealer is in NC, I'm in NY - so I'm going to try a *new* dealer about 1.5 hours from here. Hope they've got good techs there, have a couple of friends that bought there that I can pulse on that topic...

    Keep us posted Gary. Thanks.

Re: E-Tec Surging or loping ????? (dladue)

Well got the boat back from the dealer and am happy and PO'ed. They were able to take care of all my problems except the motor defector pin upgrade. They remapped the motor and regapped the plugs they were most all out to around 41-42 thousands. They did not have a pin kit in stock . Now new problem is engine will be hard starting and like to stall at an idle, hot or cold makes no differance.

All things aside I am happy to have hole shot and top end back.

I will most likley be taking it in to another dealer just for the motor work. I will be praying for this baby to hold together till the end of the season, then they can have all winter to make it right.

I still LOVE this motor even with a problem it gets the job done.

Talk to a service manager first to make sure they have the pin kits in stock and insist on new plugs with it. It is all warranty. You can also call BRP customer service for a dealer recommendation.

While it is at the dealer have them glue the seal in the water deflector valve with 3M weather strip adhesive.

Better yet, if the computer readout shows lower engine temp readings, have the dealer replace the water relief valve under warranty and check the thermostats. All this is in a service bulletin that a dealer has.

Be sure to insist on new plugs when they do the pin kit. BRP will pay on the same warranty claim with the pins. They will not pay on a subsequent claim.
