Mercury 225 EFI
I'm am looking at a boat with a 2002 mercury 225efi. The motor has 500 hours on it. How much life is left in this motor?

I would say its not only the hours , but how well was the motor was taken care of . Or better words Maint's. done to it . I think Don said he seen motors with 1000's of hours on them . I would have a tech check it out real good and have a leak down or compression test run on the motor if it was me ?

Yea I had a guy tell me the fact is have they many hours for the years means it's been taken care of and not let sit up.
Almost 11 years or so.

I always look for a engine that has been used moderately. You don't want 1500 hours on a 5 year old engine or 30 hours on the same vintage. You are talking about 50 hours a year for that engine and that would be perfectly acceptable to me. If the engine checks out and the price is right I would purchase. I had a 2004 merc 225 efi on a bay boat that I put approx 650 hours in 5 years and never turned a wrench on it accept routine maintenance. It was one of the best running engines I have ever had. Down side is it loves gas and oil by the bucket full

It's a 2002 triton tr-20 I think I can get it for around 12500

That looks like a pretty good deal..... I'd be inclined to check it out carefully, and make an offer on it.
When having it checked out, recommend including:
-Compression Test (better yet, a leakdown test)
-Gearcase Check (fluid quality, propshaft runout, shifting quality)
-Computer Diagnostic Printouts of RUN HISTORY and FREEZE FRAME (Fault) History
-Maintenance History (and current NEEDS Review)
-Of course, a Test Run on the Water to confirm proper operation.

If this boat is.at a dealership will they do all these checks for me.

What numbers should be in a good range on this motor for these test.
Also what is the fuel consumption like this motor.

Compression Specs: 90-110 psi, with a maximum variance of 15 psi.
Fuel consumption: This engine will definitely use about 33% more fuel (average) as compared to the Optimax Models.
Still not too bad, if you can run it in the 3500-4800 RPM range.
