    Red W/Purple wire??????

    E225FPLSSH

    2000 Stratos21SS

Does anyone know where the Red W/Purple wire get its voltage from? It is on the "B" lead of the ignition switch and there is no power present and the motor will not turn over, nor do the guages work. If I apply power from a "+" source to that lead everything works. What's up? Help!

    Re: Red W/Purple wire?????? (Bugs)

This info came from a post made by "The Witchdoctor" in a post that's two (2) below your post. Don't know if this addresses the problem or not!

Boating Industry of America Wire Colors

Here are the standard wire colors used in the boating industry since the late 70s. When re-powering a boat with a newer motor this is a handy reference. Most boats use these standards but always double check in case changes have been made! BIA

    Wire Color--------------------Where it is used

    Black---------------------------------All Grounds
Black with Yellow stripe---------Magneto/short to Kill
    Gray----------------------------------Tachometer signal
    Yellow with Black stripe---------Choke
    Red----------------------------------Unprotected(12V+)from battery
    Red with Purple stripe-----------Protected(+12V)from battery
    Purple-----------------------------(+12V)from ignition switch
    Tan------------------------------Overheat sensor to warning horn
    Pink-------------------------------Sending unit to fuel guage
Yellow with Red stripe----Ignition switch to starter solenoid
    Yellow-----------------------------charging stator to rectifier
    Lt.Blue with White stripe--------Trim up
    Green with White stripe-----------Trim down

I think that dark blue is always supposed to be lights or switched plus, but that doesn't show in the list.
You should have some sort of a breaker panel coming from the battery plus (maybe then through switches to the individual instruments etc.
    Hope this helps.

I thought I would be on Easy Street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!

Re: Red W/Purple wire?????? (Backlash Ar)

    Thanx Larry,
As your post states the Red purple wire carries the voltage in. But in from where I don't know. Another problem is getting my full figure (fat body) under that console. Next one will have a floating console. I have the breaker panel off...metered this, that and the other...just can't find where that wire gets its juice from.

the red/purple wire is from the fuse on the motor, which in turn connects to the battery cable terminal on the starter solenoid. Sounds like you have a corrosion problem.

    Thanx Seahorse,

Corrosion issue is quite possible. The last tournament was in the pouring rain, all day long! Hmmm, fuse on the motor? Do you know where that fuse is located? That's about where we ended our testing last night but don't have a schematic of the motor wiring, only the B&H Electronics schematic and it kind of stops right at the ignition switch before the motor.

Wish I could run home and check that now but, I guess I gotta work.

The main fuse on my 200 is on the port side. There is a holder that plugs into protective rubber thingy. There is also a spare. Neither looks liker a fuse holder.

Seahorse, did check...do have voltage on the big red wire on the starter with the key off...did not find a a fuse...found a 3"X2" device with squishey stuff incased in metal...still do not have a constant voltage on the switch unless I manually put it there...if I do that things are great...that's fine but, I would like to find the cause not just a cure.

On your DI Evinrude, the fuse box is on the stb. side and you remove the cover that has 2 large chrome screws on it. There are seven 10amp mini blade fuses that are red colored.

I don't have a book handy but I believe it is #7 fuse, the one hard to reach and located all by itself that is one of the main fuses that allows 12 volts to operate the main power relay. Best not go poking around unless you have the service manual and know what you are doing or having someone familiar with the product to help you. (that does not include a neighbor or brother in law who once fixed an 18hp Evinrude!)

    Re: Red W/Purple wire?????? (SEAHORSE)

Hooray, Hooray! Did not know it but, "Bomb" has tech support. Gave them a call on Friday and they told me exactly what you did Seahorse and sure enough that was the cause. Looked at it last night and it was NFG. Got another, put it in and buttoned everything down today. Drove us crazy but we sure did learn a lot about the boat wiring. It also saved me a few bucks because frustration was sitting in and I was ready to take a trip to TN, and buy a new boat. I sure wish it would stop raining up here!

Thanx to everyone for all the help! Greatly appreciate it!

    Re: Red W/Purple wire?????? (Bugs)

Glad to hear that it was something easy and cheap! Now you may want to do some inspections to figure out why the fuse blew. Did you see the 2 spare 10 amp fuses and the fuse removal tool inside the removable cover?

Most shorts occur behind the dashboard where a gauge wire comes loose or somehow touches a ground. Sometimes the wiring gets chafed from vibration and manages to short out. In rare instances, a guage may have an intermittent internal short.

Once I spent a whole summer chasing down a very intermittent fuse blowing problem that turned out to be an hourmeter that would internally short after running a while, but it would not short out all the time, usually about once a week and the boat was used every day.

    Re: Red W/Purple wire?????? (SEAHORSE)

I think it started with the ignition switch. It's when I went to put in the new that I did not disco the battery lead. Thought I was careful but, poof, there goes a fuse that I had no idea where it was located.

Hey Bugs, just because you have now solved that fuse problem, is NO reason to NOT come down to Nashville and buy a new boat. Actually it is a better reason because now you have a working boat and motor to trade in on the new one......let me see......driving from your house to here is what, maybe 7 hrs........see you on Monday.......bring plenty of cash or a nice check blank........I am sure that Rusty can put you in touch with the boys out front in the show room and will get you the ride you need for a lifetime of fun...........

    Re: Red W/Purple wire?????? (DRN)

    Wow DRN, I got a F-150 not an F-16...let's see...1181 miles...19 hours...1 '04 Ford F150 that loves gas...200 gallons X $3.00 = $600...the fuse was cheaper...maybe next year!

Sounds like a plan to me. Do you happen to have an address for the landing so I can punch it into my GPS to get the directions to the launch for the 17th? Champlain for a week, now that sounds like fun!!!

Scott, it will be the second right for Rt.9A going west on Rt.9. On the left will be Prospect Hill Rd. About 8 miles out of Keene, I think!
