It was all about politics. Just not on his end.
The planning stages of this pipeline are not even done yet, because they can't get permits in some areas.
The timeline to pass this was put in place as a politics play.

If the pipeline doesn't go through Canada will sell to China and Asia.
My understanding is that the pipeline would bring crude from Canada to Texas. There it would be refined and shipped to China and Asia anyway. Profits for the oil company but no fuel for America.

Possibly little fuel, not sure...
But there would have been a bunch (estimated 20,000) American jobs...

Many American jobs, and good paying jobs. Some are critical that they aren't permanent jobs, but they would last for a couple of years and might be just the shot in the arm that is needed to get things rolling in other areas.
As for the timeline for passage being put in as a politics play.............that's true. Obama was forced to make a decision. The reason this was necessary is that his original plan was simply to make no decision at all until after the 2012 elections. Unfortunately, that seems to be his plan for many decisions. I'm not complaining. For this president, no decision at all is frequently much better than the decisions he actually makes.

According to the pipeline construction company; there would only be 5 to 6 thousand temporary jobs. Plus, they wanted a waiver on a bunch of safety regulations. Just can't see an upside to this.
Still hope! This is one of two article's I've seen. The pipeline will get done......When is the question.

I'm a Union member and although I support both sides at different times I mostly lean left. I just can't get past this this Keystone deal though! How can he try to say that after 3 years in the permitting prosess he needs more time!! Temp jobs, maybe, but there will be thousands of currently unskilled people who will be skilled, high paid, in demand, welders, fitters, operators, etc when it is done. So what if it gets refined and exported. I find it hard to believe it will happen due to simple logistical costs, but if it does jobs are still supported at the refineries. Politics at its worst to keep tree hugger base happy.
Rant over. Sorry.

I'm amazed that this crude would be refined and then exported. Common sense would have it imported from Canada and used in the U.S. with that much less having to come from the middle east and elsewhere. Incredible!!![]()

Persian Gulf= close to China... Gulf of Mexico= half a world away What are they going to do offload tankers with Middle east oil then reload with Canadian oil and pay to ship it?

Al that would make to much sense to keep it here and stabilize our fuel prices Nd not be as dependent on the mid east .. To much damn sense!![]()

The planning has to be done to get the permits. You have to show the government 1) where the pipeline is to be run, 2) the type and size of the pipeline, and 3) what the pipeline will transport. It's already been thought out and planned.

There will be some permanent jobs out of this. The pipeline doesn't just run itself. This coming from an ex-pipeline worker.![]()

Just as it would make sense for us to discontinue exporting oil and fuel. The jobs created, temp. or not, would be welcome but if the amount coming from Canada equals the amount we export, why mess with it. I read there was a hold up with Nebraska and the time frame for starting. I don't think any of us have gotten real info on this yet..

The Bank that my Wife managed for 17 yrs and recently retired from is closing 11 branches in rural No. Ca. and Ore. Our unemployment rate in this county is close to 20% the folks here would love a job for 2 years!! And I bet alot of other rural communities across the country!![]()

If the pipeline did come to the US, the refiner would sell to whoever would pay the highest price, China or anyone else. That's the way it is in a free market.
So many honey-dos . . . . . so little motivation
How many people's homes would need to be torn down to make way for this pipeline? How many roads would need to be redone? What would be the immediate expense to the US? What type of revenue would it really create?
I don't think we've got direct answers to any of it. I'd just as soon see the US put more effort into shale oil production, it's our resource and should prove to be very valuable.
